Busted again -- names file screwed up ... again!!!!!

I just don't get it. This is what, the fourth year in a row I've had issues with the name file? Sigh ... and yet I'm a glutton for punishment every year.

I have edited the standard names file. Last year there was some problem with the Mac text editor -- so this year I used WordPad in Windows (via VMWare Fusion). But I'm at the end of my league year one, and for some reason OOTP is creating a bunch of free agents at the end of the season -- and all of them have the last name Cedeno. Even though there is no Cedeno in the names.txt file!

Yes, I've re-imported the file. I've even opened up the names file in WordPad, double checked it, and re-imported it. Why, why, why can't you edit names in OOTP? I'm rather upset right now -- and feel like unless you start a league in 2009 with the standard name set you may as not even well play this game.

I'm happy to send my entire league file to someone else to look at ... but if I can't get past this issue, I'm sad to say that OOTP and I will part ways.

BTW, why is OOTP creating players on the first day of the offseaon anyway?

Do you have the option selected to automatically delete players who have never reached the majors?

Have you always been using that option when you have had your problems?

Honestly, I don't know. Probably, but I can't say for sure. Is there some connection between that and how OOTP decides on names? I could turn it on if it would get me past this.

Jumping ahead, I opened a copy of my league set to the last day of the season, and changed the setting to NOT delete minor league players. Advanced to the offseason ... creates Free Agents, all named Cedeno.

Tried again .. back up from last day of season. Changed setting as above. Re-imported names file. Advanced to offseason. Created FA. Names are mixed as they should be. I find this odd!!

Is this the fix? If so, can you explain the connection?

Also a question -- why is OOTP creating free agents anyway?

This is my inaugural year. I don't have the amateur draft on yet, because I didn't want an inaugural year draft and and ammy draft in the same year. I plan on turning on the amateur draft as soon as it lets me (next preseason).

The answer to most of your questions is that I have no idea! It was just a guess due to coincident behavior.

The game is creating new free agents because you didn't hold an inaugural draft. New players have to be generated somehow.

Do you still have a copy of your league files from before you finished the season? Can you upload them?

Nutlaw ... I did have an inaugural draft, but not an ammy ... so I assume OOTP is creating players to feed subsequent seasons.

I tend to work around these issues and destroy the old league files, but I can easily reproduce the issue. I'm uploading a league file now, in which you can see some messed up names ...go to the 1948 draft log to see.

I can easily run other leagues and replicate the issue ... although it manifests itself differently each time. Sometimes its names all the same (like the aforementioned Cedeno), sometimes they appear OK, but a closer look reveals an odd pattern (like using the most uncommon names), and now they appear truncated.

Its hard to see because the league is so small, but if need be, I'll create a huge league to better demo it. Things are fine, of course, until I reimport the names file, which is a necessary step to update the league with more era-appropriate names.

The league file is CBL.lg

UPDATE:

I can't figure out how to upload on a Mac. I installed the plug-in for Firefox, but all I got on the ftp site was a list of files. No option to upload. I tried with Safari and got the upload pop-up, tried to upload my league and got "Upload failed". No further information.

So, now what? FYI, I'm using CyberDuck and the league file is 57.6 MB

ACK!

I overwrote my back up. OK, if I restore, that undoes all the other cleanup I've already done ... like deleting the random pictures being generated in the minors (with wrong uniforms) ... another OOTP issue I seem to be having.

So, for now, Nutlaw, thanks but forget this. Nothing is working. The names are screwed up. I can't keep track of back-up files. I've redone my work so many times its stopped being fun. The FTP upload doesn't work. AARGH!!!!!

I'm deleting the league in its entirity...

In fact, I'm deleting OOTP in its entirity. I'll redownload and start all over. From scratch.

And then, I'll very, very carefully copy the league folders at various points in time and save them because I'm 99.9% confident that this issue will reappear.

So for now, please close this thread.

I'll get back to you in a few weeks. It will probably take that long to start over and get past year one, especially as I'm on vacation for this upcoming holiday.

This game is way too frustrating. Maybe I should just give in and start a 2009 league with the default files. No customization. No "play it your way". <Sigh>

Not that this isn't a problem that obviously needs to find resolution, and I have no idea how many people are actually attempting the action cbbl is, but what is the status of the situation since http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...olunteers.html?

Have we officially logged this? cbbl, have you had any offers or are you continuing on with a detailed log of your events?

Hi Endgame ... Nutlaw and Tony have offered to help ... I've heard back from Nutlaw, but the delay is now on my end ... from a vacation around the 4th of July to my parents visiting this past weekend to an upcoming business trip to NYC next week I'm not sure when I'll get back to this.

My plan is to install OOTP fresh, load a modified names file when creating the league and then test it. At this point, though, unless I can get to it this week, it might be the last week of July or even early August before I can proceed.

I did send my files to Nutlaw to look at before I went forward. If you want to help also I can send them to you. Doing this via e-mail is easier than ftp upload for me. PM me with your e-mail if you want.

Thanks for the follow up.

I sent you a reply back saying I was willing to help, but I have had a few problems with emails recently.

Oh, no problem Tony. The ball's in my court right now (per my above post).

As soon as I load the file and start the league I'll send both you and Nutlaw an e-mail with my steps and results.

Thanks.

cbbl, do you want us to leave this open for now? A few posts back you asked us to close it out for now, but then the conversation kind of continued.
