OOTPX automatically adjusting league totals

Hi all,

OK -- basic setup is that I like to use real franchises, historical franchise relocations, and expansion, but at the same time using financials and a statistical environment that don't change. So in my setup I have things set to replicate 2007 and have turned off all historical progressions except for "automatically expand league".

Based on earlier feedback, I imported strategy settings from 2007 then manually entered the League Totals that OOTP uses for a 2007 game. I simmed one season, and the stats looked great. I simmed a second season, and BA was low (around .210) and HR were high (leaders hit around 70). I looked at my setup to double check things, and noticed that my league totals were very different from those I had input. As an example, AB dropped from 166714 to 57577 (about 1/3 of my input), and HR dropped from 4878 to 460 (about 1/10 of my input). These same changes were applied to the minor leagues as well.

By using the "Finish Today" button and keeping my screen on the League Setup / Strategy page, I was able to figure out that this will happen two months before the schedule start date for the league. For example, my Short A minor league is set to start June 1. On April 1, my input LTs will be there, but when I "Finish Today" and sim to April 2, my LTs will be replaced to something closer to the numbers above.

I've also determined that turning off "Automatically Expand League" does *not* seem to make this problem go away.

The only reason I can think that OOTP might be trying to adjust LTs is that the numbers I input were generated for a 30 team environment, but my league only has 16 teams. However, the numbers are just too far off for that to be a reasonable explanation (unless the process is broken), and it doesn't explain why AB would drop by 2/3 and HR by a different amount (9/10).

Jeff

Based on your other thread, I have to ask this question. What year does your league think it's playing: 1901-02, or 2007-8?

You can manually do whatever you want with League Totals for the first season, but game will automatically make an adjustment at the beginning of the next season. Based on the way I think you are playing your game, I think the League Totals are automatically being adjusted to 1902 values when you start your next season. The way you are doing things, you will have to manually change the League Totals at the beginning of every season.

Hey Steve,

Yeah, actually the game thinks it's the 1890's! (trying to build up some history before jumping in).

So here's the question: OOTP has a box for automatically adjusting league strategy, and I don't have that checked. So why would the game care if the year in which I am playing is 1895 or 1985?

It doesn't make sense to me that we can adjust whether pitcher usage and frequency of stealing progress historically or not, but have only kludgy control over the HR rate, overall batting average, etc.

I'm guessing that if I start my league in 2009 then this part would work like I think it should (i.e., the statistical context will stay the same as the league matures), but then I'd miss out on historical franchise shifts and expansion, and I really want those to be part of the experience. So I guess for now I'll continue to manually input 2007 LTs.

I have a league that is similar to what you are saying, but in it I noticed that the ballparks kept reverting back each season (I didn't notice the league modifiers since I was using old-day modifiers anyways).

I opened a bug regarding the parks changing every year even if you are not wanting them to, I am wondering if this is all part of the same issue. Do you notice your parks also changing each year? It sounds to me like the setting to automatically adjust the league being unchecked is ineffectual if your issue and my issue is the same.

Because real life stats -- and more important, the ratios -- are so different. The game has a bias toward producing stats which look realistic for the year in which your league is playing. The game design does not contemplate 2007 era players playing in 1900 stadiums. Doesn't mean you can't do it, but it does mean that you have to do more customizing work yourself.

I don't think we ever established why you were having problems using the LTMs to get the stats you wanted to see, but that is the mechanism in the game for doing that. I've always found that I could easily produce whatever stats I wanted to by adjusting LTMs, even adjusting them during the season.

I'm still inclined to think this is because you have 2007 era players playing in a 1900 era league. If so, then yes, it's not unreasonable that you are going to have to do some extra work to sustain that.

Hi Alan,

Yes, my ballparks change historically. For me, this is a good thing, but I can imagine setups in which I would like to hold parks constant, in which case it would not be.

Hi Steve,

I guess the issue is that OOTP looks to the season date to determine which year it should be trying to reproduce. I would have thought that it would know this from the "import settings" year.

Thanks for your help though.
