Zone Alarm Extreme

Bought Zone Alarm extreme and it mangled my OOTP9 ..so I figured it was a good time to buy OOTP10. Downloaded and installed without an issue yesterday 12/24/09. When I click on the icon to launch the game I get an error message from windows. All it says is OOTP was unexpectedly interrupted and asks me to file a report. I am assuming my Zone Alarm is causing this? It still won't launch with Zone Alarm turned off though. IS anyone else able to use Zone Alarm Extreme and OOTP10? Is there a setting I am missing or something? Using Windows XP by the way.

Yeah, somebody (MD maybe?) reported that OOTP seems to have a conflict with Zone Alarm Extreme, but none of the other ZA products. I use the basic ZA Internet Security suite without problems. I think you have to disable ZA Extreme to be able to play.

Search around the forums to verify this.

I'm out ideas..I uninstalled the entire game.. turned off Zone Alarm.. downloaded a brand new copy. With Zone Alarm never turned back on I was unable to launch the game still. It goes right to a windows error.

Here's that MD thread: BZ 3618: OOTP incompatibility (Windows version)

Here's Zone Alarm's forum: ZoneAlarm User Community - Powered by vBulletin

I couldn't find a mention of OOTP there, but posting there will probably be your best bet to fixing the issue or at least finding a workaround.

There's a lot of good free security software out there so you probably don't need ZAE whatever it is. I saw download.com had a decent feature on the topic recently.

Well that is distressing.. I just bought ZAE and have 12 months left.

I really want to play OOTP10..actually I need to play it. So it looks like I have a decision to make here. I did get the program to start after doing the DEP trick but it froze. I had a brief hope that my trouble was something other than Zone Alarm.

Well, I'm not saying you have to dump it (or OOTP). I'm only saying that dumping it is an option. If you bought it then I'm sure you'd like to use it. You'll just have to try to get them to correct whatever the problem is. One might feel that it's on the game developers to fix the problem and I imagine sometimes the onus should be on them (if say for instance their program is doing something bad and the security program developers notify them), but in most cases I imagine it's the fault of the security program's developers. For example, sometimes an AV program says OOTP is doing something bad when it's not doing anything different than normal. Then normally an update comes out within a day or two that corrects the problem on the security app's end. It seems the job of these programs is to determine what processes are bad and in that they end up with the occasional false positive, which I'm guessing is most likely the case here, and IMHO it's their duty to correct those false positives.

Anyway, contact them somehow and see if they'll look into it. If their program really is worth paying for then I'm sure they'll look into and try to come up with a satisfactory solution asap.
