Activating Players from the DL

Is there a way to activate someone without putting them on the major league roster? For instance I may want to demote somone rather than activate them to the major leagues. When I try to do this is tells me I need to activate them first. I admit I haven't read the documentation fully since I have played earlier versions, but was wondering if someone could save me some time.

Thanks,
TF

Demote someone else, activate the player to the ML roster, then demote them and call up the player you demoted first. Of course, if all your players are out of options, you're screwed.

You're correct AFAIK, but is that how it should be? That is, that's not what they have to do in real life is it? I'm just thinking this should BZ'd if it's not already.

In the real world, MLB clubs can reinstate a player from the DL and then option him to the minors as essentially simultaneous transactions. A club does not have to clear a roster spot first.

Note that what OOTP requires actually breaks MLB rules in that a player, once optioned to the minors, must remain there for at least ten days before he can be recalled. OOTP basically permits 24-hour recalls, which haven't been allowed in MLB since the early 1950s.
