FTP Client - What do you use?

For those who upload their league files using an ftp Client, what program are you using?

Good points?

Flaws?

Any other info you can provide appreciated.

Approxiamate time for upload? (I realize this depends on file size, but an approx would be nice)

These days I mostly use Filezilla. I don't need a ton of bells and whistles and it does the job efficiently enough, which is what I care about primarily in an ftp client.

I only use it for Web report uploads these days though. I find that OOTPX does a better job of uploading the league file compared to previous versions, so the small amount of time gained from uploading the league file with an ftp client isn't worth the known bug in ootp when you do so.

For my web reports in OOTPX, it takes about 6 hours to upload them from within OOTP. only about 90 minutes with an FTP client. For league file its roughly about 1-3 minutes regardless of using FTP or ootp.

However the upload times do depend on the file size as you mentioned, but also the bandwidth available (upload bandwidth on your end and server download bandwidth.) I have 15Mbps upload at home, which might be higher than many have.

You may have seen me mention Filezilla. I like it too obviously. I've used a number of different ftp clients in the past and while it certainly doesn't have the nicest looking icons, it's free and gets the job done just fine. Sure, there are ftp clients that do different things and they may do some things better, but I'm the same as Alan in that I don't need a lot of bells and whistles with mine. I can't recall if others do this too, but one thing I like a lot about FileZilla is that the bottom frame tells you whether you had any failed transfers or not and to easily see that is probably the most important thing IMO.

The bottom line for most people probably is that FTPing isn't that big of a deal so an awesome app isn't really needed. Of course there's probably some people who feel they need something special from their ftp client, but they're probably few and far between.

I've used WS_FTP95 for years, but someone told me yesterday it doesnt work with Windows 7. Eventually, I'll have to change I guess, so I might check into Filezilla.

smartftp because it allows multiple files to upload simultaneously from a single window.

Filezilla allows this as well just in case you didn't think it did.

(note, I'm not trying to sell anyone on filezilla over smartftp, just stating that it can do it as well.)

Thanks. I never used filezilla so I wasn't sure if it did or not. Just knew smartftp did I know some other ftp programs I used in the past did not (flashfxp, cuteftp are a couple). At least they didnt the last time I used them.

I too use WS_FTP95... it's old school, I realize. BUT I was told it would not work with Win2k and WinXP and WinVista ... and I always manage to find a way to get it to work... so I'm sure there will be a way to get it to work in Win7. The thing I like about WS_FTP95 is that is requires ZERO writing to the WinRegistry or anything. It's a simple exe file and a couple of ini files in the same folder than can be ran from a floppy disc completely independent of needing installed or anything. You can literally use it on a USB key on ANY computer with internet access without the need to even have admin privileges on the computer (short of getting around the firewall to the "outside" world).

Correct me if I am wrong... but to those that use filezilla... isn't it one of the cool FTP programs that have the ability to extract zip files on the remote site/computer?

BTW... when I say old school with WS_FTP... I mean like I use to use the previous versions of WS_FTP with win 3.1 back in 1993 when my 486SX-25 was a screamer, and I was awaiting patiently for FPS Baseball '94 ... which eventually led me to playing in online leagues and following Shaun Sullivan and leading me to OOTP 2.

It IS old school and that's why I love it. I hope it is workable on Win7 and would love hearing that information from someone. If so, I can just continue on.

However, you said Filezilla could extract a zipped file on the server? Now THIS interests me since it'd save me going to my control panel to unzip OOTP and BBCF reports. I'm interested in that answer as well.

I use FireFTP. It's a firefox extension so built right into my browser. Very convenient.

Yeah, I can too. AND I can do a LOT thru cpanel VERY quickly... however... I would like to give this power to others and I'm not about to give my cpanel creds to my other simmers... that's WAY too much power and I have many other clients, that are not even OOTP related that pay me money to take care of their websites on my hosting plan.

SO anyway I can find to allowing my simmers to EASILY ftp up the league report file and then extract it... that would be pretty nifty.

Congratulations. My post wasn't just for you though.

snnort may be thinking of ZipDeploy. I read about it awhile ago and thought it sounded great so I looked into it and then it both sounded and looked rather sketchy. I think it also only works with zips. The thing that really confused me though is I read from numerous sources that ftp simply doesn't allow extraction so it makes me wonder whether ZipDeploy is really doing it via ftp or not. Besides, if it was possible via ftp, wouldn't some ftp client in the last 10+ years have made it a feature? Surely someone would have realized it would have been a huge selling point.

Anyway, I'd rather have a quality FTP client and just use cpanel.

There is absolutely nothing in the FTP protocol that allows for the extraction of archive files within it. Now there might be some FTP client or SFTP client that also can tie into an SSH Shell access and run some form of script to do this, but then you aren't using FTP for that process.

Otherwise it could possibly extract it locally and then upload it all unextracted, but then you kind of defeat the purpose of archiving it in the first place and once again are not using FTP for it.
