You can download the Demo of OOTP 9 and play it, but you won't get the full game for free, sorry.

I'm in the same boat. I've pre-ordered but here we are in spring training with nothing to do on an expired demo that I only played twice.

Why people think that they should get the full version of the previous game for free simply because the new version is due out in a month or two (or so) is beyond me. I will say that there should be a distinct discount for the previous version during the winter. I have at least seen that with console sports titles. For instance, I would wait until the winter to buy the last season's MLB: The Show for the PS2 and pay only $10 to $15. But I certainly didn't expect it for free.

I don't think he was assuming he had the right. I think he just wantede to know if he could. Seems like a legit question. Just not the answer he wanted.

I have OOTP 9 for XP but just switched to a mac.
i would be willing to pay $15-20 bucks in addition to the preorder
for another version and OOTP10.
Dunno why they wouldnt make a bundle deal for OOTPX..

I've suggested it recently, but there was no response. There seem to be plenty of people hesitant on whether to get OOTP9 now or wait for OOTP10. I say make it easy for them by cutting the price of the previous version in half come the new year and that way they'll probably end up getting both.

Because Steam occasionally offers these kinds of deals.

Maybe I'm nuts, but . . .

Why wouldn't OOTP offer to sell OOTP9 at full price with a free upgrade to OOTP10 once the pre-order special price deal for OOTP10 is available?

It would seem to me to be a rational business strategy.

Maybe they continue to sell numerous OOTP9 games without making the offer - that would easily explain why. Or maybe the free upgrade to 10 would be a logistical problem.

Great idea, I wish all companies did that. Then when I bought my 2008 Ford Ranger, at a discount, just before the 09's came out, I could go back and get an 09 for free. That would make me a lot.

I am in that boat right now. I have owned a previous version of ))TP so know I will enjoy it, but I am just undecided if I should buy 9 or wait for 10. I would just pre-order 10 and buy 9 if it wasn't full price. But with it being full price I am not so sure about doing so.

I want to play now, but if 10 has a lot of improvements I guess waiting might be best, especially when there is no release date other than Spring.

I realize this might not be the thread for a question like this, but will look around to see if I can find an answer if now one wants to answer here..but...How long after each version do all the great mods come out for a new version of the game? I have played before like I said, but honestly never got into the mods, mainly because I never had much time in the past when playing anyway. Now I have too much time on my hands, so have a feeling I will really be into the mods this time around.

It's different.
That's hardware. No one would do that.
Software is totally a different thing.
But it would be nice

The fact that OOTP 2007 isn't free is shocking to me. I already own the game, so it makes no difference to me. You would think that as a small developer, you would want to get the older games into the hands of as many people as possible. Giving OOTP 5 away does nothing to help sales, since the game is completely different.

They are still charging for OOTP 6, which is so many versions back that it should have been freeware three versions ago.

Yeah, I dunno about that.

Not everyone buys every version, and heck, if they know that they can get any game free in a couple of years, I bet numerous potential customers would be content to wait.

I agree, which is why I don't think they ever should release anything free. I can understand some type of discount though considering the new game may be out within two months. Even half off the previous version might actually help sales on both titles. Or maybe these guys are doing just find as it is, which is most likely.

I am going to buy one of them, just need to decide if I should wait or for with 9 and not buy 10 at all. Guess I need to do a lot more reading to decide if 10 has things that I would rather not be without.

More to the point, I think, it's that trucks have pretty significant variable costs, whereas, as far as I understand it, software usually has pretty minimal variable costs. About the only variable cost, I think, OOTP has is whatever the licenser takes which my guess is maybe about 5$ a copy. Steam can probably easily eat that because they are the licenser in their case so it's more overhead than variable. I don't think we should expect OOTP to do that. Heck, I even think they should feel fine about charging significantly more than what just covers their costs for that unit and that's why I suggested half which I think would be a win-win for both the company and the customers. Half too much of a cut? Well, how about 3/4s which is about the discount for pre-ordering? That'd still get more sales I think.

Well, believe it or not, but several older versions are still floating around on shareware sites. Within the last 2 years for example, OOTP 6/6.5 has generated a revenue of roughly $17k. And, since we are a very small company trying to survive hard economic times and an awful $/€ exchange rate, we cannot afford to give anything away.

This is what I would do if I ran OOTP:

All OOTP before 6: Free
OOTP 6: $29.99
OOTP 6.5: Free with purchase of v6
OOTP 2006/2007, I would guess you are not allowed to give these away for free even if you wanted to
OOTP 8: Free, once OOTP 10 comes out
OOTP 9: $39.99, down to $29.99 once OOTP 10 comes out
OOTP 10: $49.99, or $39.99 with proof of purchase of OOTP 9, no preorder discount.

Let me expain my thinking a bit here. The $10 discount for OOTP 10 with proof of purchase of OOTP 9 might do a few things... One, it might decrease the amount of "version skippers" (people who only buy every other or every third copy). Two, it wouldn't make customers pre-order to get the discount.

I would sell OOTP 10 at $49.99 from release day until the announcement of OOTP 11. No discounts (4th of july, christmas, etc). Once the ball is rolling for OOTP 11 (usually in Q1), then I would drop the price to $39.99 and cancel the proof of purchase discount for OOTP 9 to 10, start preorders on OOTP 11, and start the $10 discount for owners of OOTP 10 to buy OOTP 11.

OOTP 9 is currently running for $39.99. I think you would sell a heck of a lot more copies of that game this time of year if the customer got a $10 discount for OOTP 10. Just look at all of the "can i get a discount" or "should i buy v9" posts. Once OOTP 10 is released, I would lower the price to $29.99

OOTP 8 is currently running for $19.99. I have no problem with this price, but I have to wonder how many copies of OOTP 8 are you still selling? How many copies will you sell once OOTP 10 comes out? I would have to think that the money made from OOTP 8 this year would be less than the possible sales created by giving away OOTP 8 as a marketing tool. The only worry here would be that people would grab the free OOTP 8 and never upgrade to a future version. It seems like a small risk to me. If someone grabs OOTP 8 and never upgrades, what where the chances that they were going to buy a future version anyways? I would take OOTP 8, make it free, and post it on every torrent site I could find.

OOTP 2006/2007 I am guessing SI would have to have a say on any pricing decisions for these games... so I will not include them

OOTP 6/6.5 -- These versions are still popular, so I would not touch the price at all. The only thing I would do is package them together. Just sell v6 for $29.99 and give v6.5 away for free with purchase of v6. I just think it would look better from a marketing stand point. The customer wouldn't get that nickel and dime feeling, and you would make the full $29.99 every time.

If e-license doesn't allow you to do "coupon codes" or previous version discounts, then maybe they can work with you to work something out, or maybe someone else can do it.

With my plan, you wouldn't lose that OOTP 6 revenue, you would lose all OOTP 8 revenue, you would probably some revenue from increased OOTP 9 sales, and hopefully gain for OOTP 10 (with the removal of the random discounts, and increased sales from OOTP 9 owners, and word of mouth sales from splashing OOTP 8 all over the internet).
