Updated rosters?

OK, first-time poster, and new to OOTP, please don't jump down my throat.

I've downloaded the demo, and love the details - specifically draft compensation for FAs, the Rule 5 draft ... basically, the GM stuff. ... Problem is, I'd really like to simulate starting with real 2009 rosters, and obviously the wait for the new game would take as much as a couple months.

Whereas Baseball Mogul - which doesn't have the above details - is available now. Given the economy I can't buy it now and then OOTP 10 when it becomes available. If there were updated rosters, I'd be willing to buy OOTP 9 and roll with it. Otherwise, I'm not sure I can wait.

Any suggestions?

There are updated rosters in the mod forum for the 2009 season. Cubbyfan has released the only set, as far as I know.

This thread is another example of why I believe this game should be released as close to opening day as possible. Most hardcore OOTP fans will buy the game whenever it is released, but to the people just walking in the door, they want to buy a baseball game at the beginning of the baseball season. This is why Madden comes out in August and the console MLB games come out in Feburary or March.

I know its tough to do with only 2 1/2 people on staff, but I would like to see the patch process cut off for OOTP 10 earlier, so that OOTP 11 can be released in March.

Disclaimer: There are still 3 days in March and 8 days until opening day. If some how OOTP 10 is released before opening day, this entire post is irreverent (like most of my posts).

Also, irrelevant.

In a perfect world sure, the game would release on or before opening day every year. Development takes time though and unless Markus and company decide to have a public beta each year I just don't see it happening.

It wasn't that long ago when OOTP used release before opening day.

Would you still feel that way if 10 has some significant bugs that Markus has trouble getting out? I can just imagine the howling if 10 isn't quite "finished" and Markus announces he's abandoning the patch process to start work on 11.

Yep, and it was awesome. Since around the split from SI though the development cycle was definitely thrown off a bit.

While I agree it would an advantage having the game drop earlier you lose any advantage it may offer if the game isn't complete or is buggy as hell.

The beta testers throw enough bug reports to Markus pre release to keep him very, very busy. If you were to add in all the tech support and forum complaints of a buggy mess and he'd be completely screwed.

I'm aware of that. It was a joke.

Yes, i would feel the same way. The game is never perfect, it never will be. There is a big difference between fixing game stopping bugs and the patches Markus gives us.

His patches are great, but 3 to 4 months after release, the focus really should start shifting to the new version. For a March release, that would be in July or August. Markus released the final patch for v9 in January!!!

Taking a bit longer view of things, Baseball only changes so much, so it stands to reason that as the yearly releases go by, Markus will get much closer to "the Ideal game" that includes just about all the features a customer might want in a baseball simulation.

Thus, the development cycle will shorten somewhat, although there are certainly a lot of factors involved and we are talking about a 4 to 10 year timeframe. I would think the release dates will begin to move back towards March in the next few releases.

Just a hunch.

I actually don't disagree with you. I usually wait till the final patch is out and then start a new league that I like to keep going till the next version. Having a long series of patches sure throws that little plan akimbo! Didn't we have a couple "final" patches this time around? One thing that might help is, as you suggest, if Markus concentrated only on fixing bugs in his patches rather than adding new features. While the latter are appreciated, they sometimes introduce new problems and lead to further patching. If all the time was spent on trouble-shooting of existing problems, then some of the long-standing issues with the game could be worked on even more.
