Of course, to be fair it's entirely possible that the threat of being benched sends "cold" players into a further spiral resulting in the .006 decrease in wOBA we notice now (assuming The Book is rigorous bla bla bla). This could lead to even greater gains than The Book suggests.

Ultimately unconventional strategies that could have unintended consequences should probably not be tried by teams like the Cubs that have the most to lose, but rather by teams like the rangers that have the most to gain ().

Ah, my hapless, hopeless Rangers. They were the same when they were in Washington during my youth. Now I'm in Texas and they are the same. Gotta love em.

Sounds very reasonable. I think we still know very little about what goes on in players' heads in many situations and as long as folks tend to (increasingly?) make tactical proposals that puts aside the human element we'll continue to remain in the dark...until some huge unintended consequence occurs (say, a wacko player attacks a manager for benching him in the middle of a hot streak). This is, however, very unlikely to happen as players have never been known to get angry on the ball field. Players who whack water coolers with bats after striking out are merely getting in extra swings.

My THEORY is that players who punch walls or whack water coolers are (relatively) angry with themselves, not their managers.

Any evidence for that?

Yes, I know. Well, about how this happens every year, anyway. This thread has gotten especially silly at times, lapsing into "Your mother wears army boots" type exchanges, but it isn't the first time something like that has happened either. Oh well, hopefully everyone has fun and no one feels too bad at the end of it all. I imagine that once X comes out we'll all be pals again. Though I have no data to verify that ..........

What's your problem with disco music? It was wonderful for my sex life in college.

If "light my fire" means what it sometimes means in song lyrics, RchW might agree with me that disco brings with it the risk of fire: I just meant it literally and RchW metaphorically.

C'mon baby, "light my fire" just has me "stayin' alive", if you know what I mean.

That is the first time I've seen The Doors associated with disco. You do have a vivid imagination BPS.

Hey, BPS.

Darby Conley writes and draws a comic strip called "Get Fuzzy". It's a world with talking animals, who seem to have close to the same rights and priviledges as humans. For the past two or three weeks Bucky (a cat who hates monkeys, and counts humans as hairless monkeys) has been developing a monkey battery. (That's a battery with a live monkey inside that generates electricity as you roll it down stairs.) Yesterday's strip seems like it could have been a commentary on your theory:

Satchel — I was just looking over your monkey battery blueprints, and something occured to me. The electricity is generated by the copper and iron and acid, right?

Bucky — That's correct.

Satchel — So… why does the monkey have to be in there at all? Why isn't it just a regular, monkeyless battery?

Bucky — I don't think we share the same vision for the future of energy.

I would argue that the human element is a critical part of the story...but I'm afraid you've totally outflanked me with the monkeyless battery image! My argument is now destined to be referred to as the monkey baseball theory.
