1938 Financials question

I am turning on financials in the yeat 1938 of my fictional league.

I am using the financial setting from the txt file that came with the game for this year. What do you think would be a good salary cap?

What I would do is take your average salary X 40 (assuming you have a 40 man roster),
Add
average coach salary X 5 (or how ever many coaches there are)
Add
Scouting budget
Add
Either 20% or 2 of your superstar level salaries

Can you tell I am an engineer?

Silvam,

I am by no means very good at this stuff, but if you take a modern league like the NFL which i believe had a cap of 116Million in 2008, maybe you could find a percentage based upon salaries from now (average), and get a decent idea of a coefficient.

Good Luck! and let us know what you come up with.

I would use the median (not the average) of all teams' salaries, scout budget and coaching salaries. This way you eliminate the lowest dregs and the highest markets so they don't skew the numbers.

Isn't the actual salary data for 1938 available?

Where can I find payroll and salary data? We have that data on team, player and league pages back to 1985. Prior to that the data is not generally available.

There is very little MLB financial data publicly available and that which is may not be entirely trustworthy, MLB accounting being what it is. MLB also fiercely protects its financial data.

The Celler Report from 1951 has 'official' data for the 1929, 1933, 1939, 1943, and 1950 seasons, gathered in connection with a Congressional hearing. The average player salary in 1939, based on that report, was $7,306.

Team payrolls in 1939 averaged $228,132, with the lowest being $144,255 (Pittsburgh) and the highest $361,471 (New York Yankees). Note that these payroll figures include the salaries of managers and coaches. Based on 1952-56 data that's also available, the salaries of manager and coaches account for roughly 20% of the team payroll.

Well, I decided to use the numbers out of the financias.txt file for 1938 and so far I am happy with turning financials on. The only thing I saw in the first month of simming was that there was a starting pitcher who signed a one year extension with his team, and then a week later was promptly released.

A week after that, he was signed by another team and is currently 4-2 with the new team. I don't get why he was released in the first place. I hope there isn't much more of that stuff.

I don't have a salary cap yet as I figure I will let it go for a few years to see how the salaries shake out.

I have seen this happen more often than it should. I am hoping this gets minimized in the next game.
