Unhappy Windows version allowed on Linux via WINE?

Given that the preorder period is about to expire, and the ordering Linux port requires a PayPal membership which I refuse, I need to hear from someone who knows.... Does the OOTP 10 Windows version's license permit running it on Linux via WINE?

Me too; thanks! But I'm not at all concerned about whether or not OOTP will run on WINE; I'm pretty sure it will, having been able to get it to work previously. Rather, I'm wondering if the EULA will allow it.

So, to reiterate... Does the OOTP 10 Windows version EULA permit running it on Linux via WINE?

I don't see any problem with this configuration from a licensing perspective, although I'm not sure we'll be able to give you a ton of formal support if you run into troubles.

Thanks! And will there be no non-Paypal option?

The lack of formal support running under Linux is no change from OOTP 9; I understand. Thanks for the reply!

I'd certainly rather run the supported Linux version, so before I actually pull the trigger on the Windows preorder... Markus said in the sticky "Mac/Linux and Paypal" article that a non-Paypal preorder option would happen within the preorder period. Is that not going to happen? If so, I'll be a little disappointed, but I'll have no hard feelings, and I'll preorder the Windows version.

I'm sorry, we are working on the non-Paypal option but there are some problems. As soon as the credit card account finally works we will just offer the Mac and Linux version for the discounted price for a week or so. We'll send a newsletter around then.
The non-Paypal option will be available very soon I hope. But probably not in-time for end of pre-order period on 27th.

Same here for WINE. It also ran under VMware and Cedega. I seem to recall that it ran under Xen as well.

At one point, I had issues with online league exports through WINE, but everything else worked fine.

For those of you who haven't tried Linux yet, give it a look. It's faster and more secure than Windows by far, and it and 99% of the software that runs on it are free. You can run a demo without installing anything to your hard drive, and you can install it to dual boot Linux/Windows. Did I mention that it was free?

I just installed Ubuntu on a box I had lying around. My first ever Linux install. I have to say that so far I am really impressed. Still working on figuring stuff out like file permissions (what do you mean i dont have permission to delete that file?).

On the same hardware, OOTP runs faster on Linux than Windows. Much faster.

Andreas, thanks very much for your reply. That's great news! I'd much rather have the supported Linux version, so I'll eagerly await the non-Paypal option.

Well, you really should be. It's faster than Windows, more secure than Windows, isn't a kludge like Windows and is STABLE.

Giving root rights to a user account is a bad idea for security reasons. But there is a simple fix: the sudo command.

Here's a quick tutorial: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

If you have a 64-bit processor and install 64-bit Linux, it's waaaaaaaaaaay faster than Windows on the same machine.

Thanks, was playing around with the sudo command last night some. Every time I jump on that machine I am learning more. Its just a cycle of running into a wall, Google the fix, and run into the next wall.

Thanks for that link, will give it a read

Glad to see some other Linux folks around here. I just discovered OOTP recently and preordered the Linux version shortly after trying the v9 demo. My preferred flavor is Fedora and with the exception of Blu-Ray playback, I haven't really had cause to boot Windows since February.

I told my wife last night that I doubt if I will ever buy a Windows machine again. I am really impressed on how Linux is running on this old Pentium III I had laying around.

If people will just give Linux a try they generally realize pretty quickly that it's a much better operating system than Windows. Then they realize that they can dual boot. Then they realize that 99.9% of the software is free. Then they realize that they don't get viruses or trojans and that they can browse safely again. Then they realize that Linux is much faster and completely stable. Then, like you, they realize that they aren't going back. For OOTP users, it's the perfect operating system - you get a much faster game.

Owning a copy of Ubuntu Linux for Dummies, which is like twenty bucks, and a copy of the Ubuntu Pocket Guide, which is like ten bucks, might stop almost all your googling.

Or you could just ask questions on the Ubuntu Absolute Beginner Talk forum, where friendly people from around the world will answer ANY question about Ubuntu you might have.

Absolute Beginner Talk - Ubuntu Forums

I've been using some flavor of Unix since 1975 (when I started out on a DEC PDP 11/70) and I try to tell everyone the truth: it's a great operating system, and Linux is much, much, much better than Windows (and Ubuntu is IMO the best new user choice for Linux).

FWIW, the game seems to install and run just fine through Wine. The only thing I've had trouble with was the initial licensing (I had to go through the menus to find the "Unlicense" launcher, which brought up the eLicense control - previous versions didn't need me to do that).

Also, the game hangs during loading if I try to run at 1440x900 - other resolutions load up fine, but that one resolution causes the game to stall after the spinning baseball goes away on the loading screen. Other than that, all seems fine so far.
