Manual, of course
Although I have to admit that I generally just rank by some appropriate factor. I like using RA/9 for pitchers, but that does sometimes result in some strange decisions.
(At least I only allow qualifiers.....)

I let the game. Not only do "they" seem to make sane decisions, it's part of the fun for me - letting some unseen, yet knowledgeable force, pick the awards.
Same goes for All-Star teams.

I pick my own...
I usually pick the batter with the most homeruns with an average of .280 or better. I also look at the batter with the most hits.... I might select a batter with plus 200 hits and 20 to 30 homers over a batter with 160 Hits and 50 to 60 homers. Pitcher a split between best record and ERA.... I have selected a 18 game win with a 2.18 era than a pitcher 22 game winner with a 3.25 era I created a Reliever award for the closer in the manual award. Rookie of the year award.... which set of stats would I want my rookie to have..... kinda tough when a rookie has 40+ homeruns versus a 16+ game winner.... I usually pick the batter unless the pitcher was < 2.50 era I get upset when the computer picks 6 first basemen for all-star teams.... lol Last edited by t_wil1; 06-02-2009 at 06:14 PM. |

I do both
for my "god" league I control everything and make constant edits - so naturally I choose all the awards. for my sim league that I control the current giants - I let OOTP decide for my historical league - I let OOTP do it and then make an occasional change. for all I pick the all-stars this is an example of what makes OOTP so great IMO - the flexibility to do these sorts of things my way, and not some determined by the developers way - which is the status quo for most games. These cusomtization in the smallest details is why OOTP is the gold standard for me.

To me it is cheating to do it yourself.
I never change anything in OOTP except for the names of the Awards. I wanna play the way the default game is designed. The way Markus I suppose suggests we play. Always hate to change that. Plus the game is awesome when you feel like it was earned rather than you giving it to yourself. |

Had to chime in. I agree that zero errors does not a good outfielder make, however...
as someone who watched roughly 150 of the Brewers games last year, I can assure you that he was very solid. Maybe he didn't get quite the jump on the ball as some gold glovers, but his spectacular arm saved runs and his speed chased down gappers. His 3rd base defense was atrocious, but for a 1st year LF, he performed WAY above expectations. I predict a gold glove in his future. (Not that I am biased in any way )

On the topic of manual award selections, I have this thought. I don't believe it's this way in the game (the online league I'm in hasn't done this so I don't think it's an option), but it would be great for online leagues for each owner to select their award selections after the postseason and just before the offseason switch. They could rank players they feel should win the award 1-3 or 1-5 with appropriate point totals for each place and when all the files are imported the game would calculate all the numbers and reveal the winners.

I let the game do it because, frankly, I just can't be bothered to do it myself.
Mostly, that's because I have a dim view of real-life awards (too political, sometimes divorced from reality and based solely on reputation - especially Gold Gloves)
