Feedback requested from anyone playing OOTPX on a netbook

If you are playing OOTPX on a netbook, could you take a minute and post how it performs and what netbook you're using? I'm really curious as to how it will do.

I'm inheriting an old laptop from a friend of a relative of a friend's dog or something like that. I don't believe it is much more powerful than a good netbook. I, too, would like to hear some benchmarks.

if OOTPX runs well enough on a netbook...well, the possibilities are really interesting.

I installed it on a 8 year old Sony Vaio V505AX (P4 1G, HD:40G) using WinXP. It runs a little bit slow, but works fine.

I think that is right about what I am going to be running as well.

Anyone out there using one of the new netbooks, like an ASUS Eee PC, and playing OOTPX?

I installed it on an Acer Aspire One running linux. Unfortunately, the app won't launch, I get this error:

Error, unable to continue...

Unable to open graphics. Make sure your screen resolution is at least 1024*768 and that your windows taskbar is not set to always remain on top.

I'm actually at E3 right now, and probably won't be able to hook up to an external monitor until tomorrow. I was hoping I could just launch the app and use the window manager to move the screen around to circumvent the resolution limit. Maybe I should post in the tech support forum.

Thank you, Jarmenia, but that's a laptop.

I'm trying to see how well OOTPX runs on netbooks.

That's what I was afraid of. Can you post the outcome here?

I'm still working on it. I was told on the Tech Support board that it sizes itself based on what the X server thinks. They recomended using a virtual desktop in xorg.conf (the kind where the screen scrolls down when you move the mouse over to it). I tried to use vnc, set up an X server session at 1024x768, then use a vnc client that can scale, but the application still crashed. I will find a way to make it work and fit on the screen, here's hoping it doesn't require anything drastic. The specs of the netbook otherwise should be plenty to handle the app, so there has to be a way to do it.

Please keep posting what happens.

Meanwhile, is anyone running OOTPX on a netbook? (Not notebook, netbook!)

MSI Wind U100..2 gig memory/160 gig HD/ Windows XP Home

Runs like a dream.

My only request/plea is that Marcus realizes that millions of these things are out here, and that a 1024 X 600 mode to take advantage of them would be ideal.

So far, his attitude has been that he isn't going to adapt for that.

Astray does make it work, although it can be a little stretched and hard to read, as you're taking 1024 X 600 into 1024 X 768, which makes the letters lower than normal, but just as wide.

I change it to the 720 so I have room to see the bar, but if I forget to turn on Astray, it goes back to the default 1024 X 768. Argh!

Please help us use this program better on netbooks!

Thanks for the info. I am in the market for a MSI Wind U100 but was a little reluctant because I wanted to make sure it would play OOTP X

Thanks a lot, Adamosity. Maybe we can get Markus to add netbook resolution in a patch - after all, it's a new market.

I've been thinking about this. Netbooks being a large new potential market and all, what do we need to do to get Markus & Company to write a 1024 x 600 driver for OOTP?

And a large new support headache. Netbooks are designed for what their name implies, surfing the web and sending email. You can put some additional functionality on them such as word processing but they are in no way intended to replace full featured laptops or desktops. They won't have the power (memory / cpu) to run OOTP for many seasons.
