The Curious Case of John Murphy

Well, I ran 1871-2009, using the stats package that came with OOTPX. Everything looked good until I glanced at the pitcher's all-time leaderboards, and saw John Murphy with an amazing 775 career wins, not to mention 501 losses and over 11,000 innings pitched! Not bad for a guy won exactly five games in his real career, all in 1884. In my sim, though, Murphy pitched 41 seasons (hello), from 1883-1924, winning 20 games nineteen times (Warren Spahn, get outta here).

Then I looked at Murphy date of birth: 5-5-1882. Uh oh.

Checking the Master file, apparently someone decided to give all the players with unknown DOBs the same birthdate: 5-5-1882, including guys who debuted as early as 1871! Oops.

Also, a number of players have no first names; not just the 19th century guys lost in the mists of time, but several contemporary players, like Tim Raines, Jr., who name is simply given as "Raines". (Now, where have I heard that name before?)

In short, the stats file is screwed up. I'll go back to using last year's stats folder (or Lahman 2009) until this gets fixed...

You are correct. There is a master.csv from 5/1/09 that must not have made it to Markus via the Spritze to Garlon to Markus path that had the birthdays corrected. I would post it here but it is too big. I'll send it to Garlon today.

Does this mean we should wait and not start a new game, or is this just a problem replaying the early years of baseball?

Only affects players with unknown birthdates. They are all from the 1800's.
