Do you set your lineup or do you ask your manager?
Mired in a 12 game losing streak, I caved in and let the manager have the lineup he wanted.
I think they usually stick weak hitters in the 2 spot. But lo and behold, my team started winning. So, does the AI know best when setting lineups? |

I find that the AI does a good enough job at it that it's not worth my time. Besides, studies have shown that lineup order doesn't have a huge effect on the outcome of games as long as it's sensible (e.g. conventional/traditional or descending OBA). So as long as you've got your best players in the lineup in a somewhat sensible order, you should be fine.
If you're finding you're not winning it's probably best to invest more energy into finding and developing better players than tweaking your lineup.

Having an optimal lineup can get you an extra win or two over a season...and sometimes that's the difference between going to the playoffs and watching someone else in them. Don't neglect your lineup.

I let my manager set my lineup. The reason I do that is because I just play the role of GM and they don't set lineups in real life.

I may not be the typical OOTP player. I far prefer the GM part of the simulation experience, and leave the managing to a manager. If I do any managing, it is because I fired my manager during the season and have not yet replaced him.
Obviously, if I am playing out a "career" and working my way up from the lowest minor leagues, I have to set all the lineups and such while I have been hired to be a manager at a particular level.

To me, setting the lineups is an integral part of my OOTP experience. In my experience sometimes I'm smarter than the computer manager but sometimes I'm not because I manage base on pre-conceptions whereas the computer will just look at empirical evidence. But agonizing over the lineups is part of what makes OOTP fun for me and I'd have a hard time letting the computer control my entire team.

I let the manager do it and then I tweak it when I feel it is necessary. For instance, when I got a young player who I want to get in steady playing time, but his ratings are inferior to another player. Generally, the AI selects the better player over the developing player.
I also tend to tweak the pitching setup more than the lineup, I rarely modify the lineup, focusing mainly on the depth chart and pitching assignments. |

At least until the first injury hits.

like others have said. I play a GM role, that's slightly more involved, but still not managing.
I let managers set the minor league rosters, and handle demotion/promotion in the minors. (but I may take back that role as I get more comfortable) But I have the game set to let me handle lineup's, however, I merely set the depth charts for each scenario (LHP,RHP, DH, ETC) and then use the function button to ask the manager for all lineups only. I sim a week at a time, and I usually redo the "ask manager for lineups every sim or two, depending on injury or how someone is playing. |

I'm lazy and let the manager set up the depth charts and lineup. If he wasn't such a freakin' nut playing one 1st baseman at catcher, the other 1st baseman in right field, he wouldn't have to play the left fielder at first. I'm not playing with coaches on but I think I'll turn it on for a day so I can fire this screwball.

I set my own major league lineups, but I let the AI set my minor league lineups. I do all roster moves, trades, etc though. Minor league lineups and minor league pitching rotation are pretty much the only things I let the AI do for my teams

It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you.
