Should I Wait For The Game to Be Patched? Do I Even Need OOTPX At All?
Hello all! I am a long time OOTP'er (since OOTP2). I have purchased every one since then. For some reason I am holding off buying OOTPX. I think it is because I always buy the game right away and then start leagues and have to restart them when a patch comes out. It is mainly my fault because I like to start a league fresh if something is tweaked within the game when a patch is released.
I'm curious as to how you all feel about the game so far. Do you think alot has to be addressed in the next couple of patches? Should I wait to buy it at least after the 1st patch? I guess I'm just asking you to talk me into buying it now. I'm going to try to hold off and decide if I even want to purchase this version at all (times are tough as far as $$$). I'm still loving OOTP9. It seems to have everything. Why do I need another version of OOTP on my PC? BTW: I do like the idea of just buying OOTPX to help support Markus and team. They have always delivered a top notch product here! Thanks for your time! - manooly Last edited by manooly; 06-08-2009 at 09:14 AM. |

There is nothing major that would prevent me from suggesting the game 'out of the box.' There are minor fixes that I think need to be done and the team seems to be addressing most of them. None of them that I know of will make me restart my solo game. This has been a pretty smooth release, the extra testing time paid off.

There is a fairly major issue with pitcher ratings. The AI gives widely fluctuating ratings to individual pitchers in short periods of time. There are a few threads about this. It will warp the AI's judgment in trading or trading for pitchers.

I've played enough of my solo league that I really think any fixes will be too minor for me to want to start over. There simply aren't enough problems/any severe problems that are hindering my game play.
Definitely an amazingly clean release! |

Having said that, I'm ultra-conservative and wait until after the final patch before I convert my league to the latest version. I want the game to be as good as it is going to get before I play my league. I have put three years' work in my league and want to make sure the new version will work well with it. It is commendable that you want to support Markus and his great game. I hope many of us will do that. I am on the Beta Team and get a free game, but I think I will just buy a version to support Markus and the development team. If they don't do well, then I have no game, which has given me seven years of great enjoyment. I'm sure OOTP10 will be worth the money. If you can afford it, buy it. Just run test leagues until the final patch, then start your serious league. Or do as several have suggested - start a league and see how it works. Just use a back up in case it is not what you want and start over again with each patch. That way you can enjoy the game right now and support Markus, too. I haven't seen any trades that are really out the ordinary. I don't know if the AI warping is over the top skewed. That being said it should be normalized in the first patch.

Take a look at this. The AI proposed this deal in the shop a player feature.

Is it possible that scouts were rating people different. Both players are somewhat inexperienced and young. I had players that my scout thought were 4 star players but once I got them in camp they turned out to be 1/2 star. It is possible that the offering team saw thought the pitcher wasn't as good.

Someone at my local Coffee Bean suggested that when I was setting up my league. I thought it was funny so I put it in.

To the OP, you realize you asked a question that is impossible for anyone to answer right?
Only you can decide if you have the money to buy a game, especially if one of your reasons is to be kind to the dev team. I have not owned any OOTP version before X, so I'm a bad person to respond to the differences. I can only tell you from a new player stand point, this is an excellent game. My only complaint is all the disk writing it does, which means, I'm waiting for writes more than playing with my rosters and stats. And from what I hear, this is a long standing issue (OOTP has to cache awesome to disk, because it has too much awesome!)

It seems like you have two questions - how does OOTP X compare to OOTP IX, and how significant are the bugs that need to be corrected in the first patch?
I would definitely recommend buying this game. It features significant changes from OOTP IX, it's not just a patch boxed as a new game. If you are as uptight as I am about ratings, the current version will not suffice and it probably would be best to wait to buy the game until the patch is released (or go ahead and buy the game, but wait to start your league until after applying the patch). |
