1916 PoY Award Voting
Right...
I don't know how the computer is deciding who gets to become my Pitcher of the Year. I think they're going by wins, but I'm not sure... Pitcher A 21-6, 2.92 ERA, 277.2 IP, 98 Strikeouts, 74 Walks Pitcher B 16-11, 1.91 ERA, 287.2 IP, 122 Strikeouts, 74 Walks Pitcher C 16-10, 2.34 ERA, 261.2 IP, 136 Strikeouts, 89 Walks Pitcher D 14-10, 1.90 ERA, 241.2 IP, 130 Strikeouts, 25 Walks Pitcher A is who the computer would choose, B is number 2 in voting, and C is third. Pitcher D is pretty much the dark horse. He's not getting any recognition because he was on a losing team. I see everybody is going for the twenty winner. Good choice. He won it last year with thirty wins. Last edited by Storm; 06-08-2009 at 12:14 PM. |

Wins are a huge part of CY voting in real baseball so not surprised that it values wins more than anything else. It also could value some sabermetric stats that you are not showing us like a VORP or something like that.

If pitcher D had pitched 20 or more innings I might give him the nod... |

I was just curious what you guys would think. Chief's ERA is higher than anybody else on that list. I could add Mordecai Brown into the mix who only has three wins less than Johnson and then after they're comparable all around. |

The AI in the game does a good job picking the award winners, but I only use it for a guide and pick my winners manually.
I usually go with a pitcher that wins 20 games and has an ERA under 3.00. If they happen to play for a second division team, I give them bonus points in choosing the winner. If a guy with a good hitting team wins 22-25 games, but has a 3.50 ERA, I usually go with a pitcher that might win fewer games and has a much better ERA. For instance, 20 games and a 2.85 ERA. I give a bonus to a pitcher who wins a lot of games for a top team, but only if he has a relatively-good ERA. A 19-7 mark with a 2.75 ERA would be a winner over 25-10 and a 3.75 ERA. I would give Ned Garver of the 1950 St. Louis Browns the pitching award if he came up in my league. He won 20-13 with a 3.74 ERA for a last place team that hit .247 and had a 58-96 record. The league batting average was .271 and the league ERA was 4.58. Bob Lemon of Cleveland won the most games going 23-11 with a 3.84 ERA, but with a team that was 92-62. If Garver has won only 18 games, I still would have favored him over Lemon. Early Wynn of Cleveland was 18-8 with a league-best 3.20 ERA. I would still give it to Garver. Garver is the only major leaguer in the last 75 years to win 20 games for a last place team. It really was an amazing season for him. Last edited by Eugene Church; 06-08-2009 at 01:11 PM. |
