league total vs league modifier

I believe have managed to confuse myself (haha) while trying to get my league totals the way i want them. So hopefully this is a simple question but what exactly is the point of the modifiers? What i mean is if i, for example, think there are way too many HR's being hit why not just lower the league total for the HR stat. What is the benefit of leaving the total alone and just adjusting the modifier?

It seems to me the modifiers are best left to the game to adjust at the end of each season. I don't touch those.

That does lead me to wonder if this version of the game works different than 6.5 where you had to raise things like homerun totals to produce less HR's for the league.

Don't change the league totals. They work in a counter-intuitive way (if you raise them, they will decrease results). Moreover, it's very difficult to figure out what exactly will result if you do change them (assuming you had some reason to want to). Change the LTMs. They work in a very straight-forward way. Better yet, let the game change them automatically at the start of each season. If you are concerned about what happens in your first season, check this out:

Steps for getting more realistic stats in your first season

He's quick that SteveP, he's really quick. Beat me to it. Can't go wrong with his thread or the one that has my Tolstoyish post (#3). SteveP is definitely the discoverer of this method, but I think I advanced it a little bit in terms of Position Error Modifiers. Of course, he may or may not agree with me and whatever he thinks is cool with me because he's the one that came up with it.
