Any issues in the nation editor?
I'm thinking of re-starting my OOTP9 African League in OOTP10. Within that league, I would like to use the nation editor to give several African nations a higher baseball level.
Has anyone tried something like this and encountered any problems or wierdness? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I haven't messed with the in-game Nations Editor in OOTPX. I know there were problems with it in previous versions, but I haven't heard if they've been fixed. I don't think it was a very high priority, though.
Personally, I think even if it does work correctly now, it's just easier to do the editing inside the nations.txt file (and I've done a LOT of editing of that file!) I recommend changing the extension from .txt to .csv to do your editing, since it puts the data into neat, easy-to-read columns, then saving and changing back to .txt. (And of course, remember that you'll have to start a new game, as any changes you've made won't take effect until you do so.) |

In past versions, I've created my own nations.txt file. This year's nations.txt looks very strange and so, I don't think I'm going to tinker with it unless someone tells us that you can use last year's with this year's game (which it seems like you should, but..who knows?)

Thanks, but I'm a bit reluctant to fiddle with the nations.txt file. I play several solo leagues, and a change to that file would proably impact every other league I play or am likely to create.
I was wondering about the in-game nation editor because that seems to be a simple way to do what I want to do: make sure the game creates a good number of major league quality players from each country that has a team. Usually when I create a pan-national league I wind up with a huge number of Americans, Dominicans, Canadians, etc and much smaller numbers of other nationalities. I've been reading more about the in-game nation editor and I'm wondering a) if I'm really understanding what it does and b) if the problems that you, Muzamba, mentioned still exist. May I ask what those problems were? I've been using the 'search' function but I can't find what you are referring to.

Honestly, I don't remember what kind of problems people were having. All I recall is reading a thread somewhere in this forum where it was at least implied that the nations editor didn't work well. (Perhaps it was just too cumbersome for their taste. Not sure at this point.) For what it's worth, I've already switched out the nations.txt file in OOTPX and the replacement is working fine. I noticed what you were talking about with the file looking strange compared to years past. It's all cluttered, but it doesn't appear to have any different information or formatting when its opened up as a csv. If you're more comfortable using the nation editor than editing the nations.txt, then I doubt you would have any serious problems. However, keep in mind that the txt file can easily be switched out to create different leagues. So if you wanted to edit nations.txt for your African league, all you'd need to do would be to back up the original, create a copy of it, make your changes to the new copy, open up OOTP and create your league in-game, then switch the original nations.txt back in. (Remember, this file is only used when creating a league. It won't affect any of your existing leagues.) Last edited by Muzamba; 06-11-2009 at 12:17 AM. |

This year's just looks strange as it doesn't have each new line of data starting on a new line when you open it with notepad. If you open it with MS Excel it looks just like it always has. |

Modifying the nations.txt file seems pretty simple to do, if a bit tedious. What, then, is the point of the in-game nation editor? Is it just one more option? One of the beautiful features of OOTP is that it often provides several options for a particular thing. Does anybody out there have any insight on what problems there were with the in-game nation editor?

I actually did notice one inconsistency between the in-game editor and the nations.txt file. In the in-game editor, there are 5 fields for language/name versus only 4 in the nations.txt file.
Now, I'm not sure exactly how this difference is reconciled. It's possible that the game doesn't even recognize the 5th field from the in-game editor. Or maybe it actually tacks on another two numbers (the Name Set ID and the percentage) at the end of each nation's line in the text file. If anyone has noticed this before or if someone knows something about this oddity, please tell us what you know. I don't really have the time right now to test it out myself, but I would be curious to know if this really does work. It would give me a pretty good reason to use the in-game editor. |

Just use a text editor. Works fine.

How about it? Has anyone out there encountered issues when using the in-game nation editor?
