Scouts

Do you use scouts? It seems like my scouts always rate seemingly way to many players a 5 star potential, I was wondering what your experiences were with and without scouts. I am starting a new fictional league, have always used scouts but thinking about turning them off.

I saw the same thing where my scout was rating almost everyone taken int he first 3 rounds of the draft as 5* potential. He was 8/9/8 (out of 10) across the board and his preference was Heavily Favour Tools". After the 2009 Season he retired and I had to hire another scout. He was a 9-9-9 and was favor ability and he was a lot more realistic in how he rated the players. I also increased my scouting buget and upped the amount spent on Amature Scouting and that seemed to help aswell.

Depending on if a scout favors tools or ability your draft pool ratings will look very different. Tool guys really favor prospects and rate them higher, thus guys in the draft looking better. Ability guys are better at determining how well a guy will perform right now. I like to play with neutral scouts.

If you turn scouts off, it says the ratings are the "actual" ratings, what exactly does this mean. Is it that the ratings are the actual ratings of the players at that time, but they are still subject to change, you just have a scout to tell you whether they will change for the better or worse?

actual ratings with scouts off are the actual ratings of the player at the time.
If you had scouts turned on, you would have what the scout "thinks" the player's actual ratings are at the time.

Right, but when scouts are turned off, how are potential ratings affected? If a guy is 5 star potential, is he going to become a 5 star player no matter what?

No, it just means at that time that player looks like he could become a 5 star player. No guarantee he will though.

oh no. that all depends on how he performs, how hard he works, and a little luck. Scouts do not change the way player's develop. they are just an added realism wild-card that provide for more mistake players and diamonds in the rough.

It can also make historical sims more challenging as well. While you do know who all the great players are, with scouts on you'll never be positive. It makes you look at performance more.
