This should be an option, not a mandate.
It's the workaround to mimic real life where you need to use an option to send those players down. Forcing you to get waivers on the players out of options, it never worked right without it.

Why did it take a whole week before someone started crying about ratings hits? The weeping over injuries started right away.

I don't understand the 40 man roster thing at all. Isn't the Major League roster 25? And then in September you can expand it to 40, pulling up any players that you wish?

The primary roster limit is 25 from Opening day through August 31st, then again during the playoffs. From the day after the World Series ends until the day before the next Opening Day the primary roster limit is 40, as it is in September.

So how does the game determine who is part of your 40 man roster after the World Series is over? Does it just take the 40 that you used before the playoffs?

It SHOULD, because in real life the only roster moves you can make during the playoffs involve injury replacements, which is to say that as far as I know you can't acquire or release/dfa players. I know that posters who know much more about this than I do are dissatisfied with how the game handles playoff rosters and replacements, so I don't really know.

A basic explanation:

Major league clubs are limited to directly owning a total of 40 player contracts. For most of the season, the active roster limit is 25, meaning the other 15 players under contract must be in the minor leagues. These players are on optional assignment to the minors, and can be called up to the active roster or sent back down to the minors as the major league club best feels in order to account for injuries, evaluating a player's ability at the major league level, and so forth.

In September, the active limit increases to 40 players, in other words, the same number as the total number of player contracts a major league club can directly own. However, most clubs do not bring up all 15 players on option to the expanded active roster for various technical reasons related to the way optional assignments are governed under the rules.

So does this mean that during the regular season the only players that can be brought up from the minors are the 15 that are part of the 40 man roster, or can you bring up whomever you wish?

When you bring someone up, he will be put on the 40-man roster if he is not already on it. If there is no room on your 40-man roster, then you won't be allowed to bring him up to the majors.

They have to be on the 40 man roster. If they aren't on the 40 man roster, its full, and you still want to bring him up you have to take someone off of it (which usually / always results in you waiving them).

I don't know if this help or not, but I just wanted to add on to funkadillo's post. This is why players will sometimes be transferred to the 60 day DL, if eligible, because it clears a spot from your 40 man roster, meaning that you don't have to place someone on waivers.
