Newbie: This game is great

I don't want to sound too much like a fanboy newbie, but this game is amazing! The depth and detail are so much better than the other games I've played -- Strat, Diamond Mind, Action -- that I'm almost obsessed.

The little things are incredible. A news report about a player named Palmer's 5-for-5 game headlined: "Great stroke: Palmer goes 5-for-5." The game knew to relate the name Palmer to golf. Excellent!

Sure there are little annoyances but remember that all of this is provided for under $30. Do you REALLY expect perfect, with every little bug ironed out, for that price? This game provides SO much more value than the competition, which charges more BTW.

This is my first time with this game and am starting with the provided ABA league. Already I've developed a contender and, after leading the league all season in Year 4, we had injuries and slumped in September and lost the pennant by a game. What's worse, we lost the season finale 1-0 to a pitcher that I traded at the end of spring training. High drama and great fun!

Thank you Markus and Co. for a great game. Can't wait to play some more.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but that was probably a coincidence.

Still, this game gives me more hours of enjoyment in a year than any other, so I appreciate your sentiment.

I agree with Curtis on both statements.
  1. They improved PbP in this version, but not that much!
  2. The game keeps getting better year after year and within each version cycle as patches (or, maybe just patch, singular, this year from what I have read) are released.
I have been critical at times, but overall OOTP is one helluva game.

We have needed to be critical at times, but overall it is one helluva game.

Oh well, nice coincidence. It reminds me of a game in Diamond Mind when the first time I saw a pbp about a player making a "capital" offense it was a member of the old Washington Senators.

I've already picked up a lot of good advice by reading through the message boards here. Good stuff here. Thanks for the welcome!

I'm also pretty new to OOTP, and I'm also impressed.

Also, the Palmer "stroke" doesn't seem like a coincidence to me! Admittedly, I haven't played that much, but I don't recall seeing the word "stroke" in any other headlines.

I have been obsessed for six years now. I played thousands of games of Strat from 1986 on. OOTP takes the cake. The other games do have their high points, and are better at some things than OOTP, but, OOTP's strengths are in the areas that I like, and simply trump all comers.

Having helped write the english.xml file (just a tiny bit, others have done far, far more) I can assure you that this is a coincidence. What happened was that the game detected a hitter getting five hits in the game, which generated a news article. The game picked a headline from the 5 hit category and the accompanying article.

These get customized through the use of "tokens". Here is an example:

[Team%1]'s [Batterlastname%] rips five hits in win over [team%2]

That looks like gibberish.

OOTP takes the tokens and determines the correct value for it. So, the end result is:

Cincinnati
's Palmer rips five hits in win over Houston

I agree. Part of the reason these boards get so heated is that there is an intense desire to iron out every little bug and obtain perfection.

I worked pretty hard getting that quickstart put together, and had some really great helpers design the logos and uniforms. The idea behind the ABA was to have a league with most of the bells and whistles in place, so a new player could start an awesome league in just a few seconds. It is also useful for screenshots, as there are no trademarked images used. I have learned that many people enjoy playing it extensively.

You guys did a wonderful job with the ABA. It's great to see so many people willing to dive in with their expertise to make a fine game even better.

I have to chime in to say how much fun I am having with this game, too. I'm sort of a lapsed baseball fan, but I've always loved baseball statistics, and even though I tried an older version of OOTP and it didn't grab me, this one really has - I'm having fun playing historical leagues as well as the ones I made up. I absolutely love the details of each individual pitch, that's really a great addition to this version of the game.

Curtis is right. Pure luck.

All news stories are generic. They is no way the text team can accomplish something like that headline you cited.

Wish we could, but not in OOTP10.

Maybe one day in the far away distant future...
