AI Draft

Has anyone else noticed this?
The past (real) MLB draft had a ton of pitchers taken in the first 2 rounds. I have gone through 3 years of drafts in my OOTP10 and have noticed that the AI does not seem to evaluate young pitchers very high. A few get drafted in the early rounds, but not proportional to real life. It does not seem realistic to me.

In past versions of OOTP, the computer would often prioritize 20/20 SP over much better hitters (70+ potential). I don't know if this was fixed in 9 or X though.

I know in this year's draft, the number of good pitchers far outweighed the number of good batters. That's probably why they drafted so many pitchers.

But typically most Major league teams load up early on pitching prospects. I understand that this year was very pitching deep.

In the 2008 draft, only 22 of the first round picks (46 total) were pitchers (including Casey Kelly as a pitcher, incidentally, since that's how Boston want to use him long-term).

In 2007, exactly half of the first round picks were pitchers.

I have noticed the trend you mention in the limited number of drafts I've run in OOTPX. How big is the differential you're generally seeing?

As cnield suggested, there was a conscious decision made to decrease the number of early round starters drafted, and this was done because posters up through Version 9 complained that too many were chosen. I think I even remember seeing this change on one of the few 'feature' lists for Version 10.

I realized that there are many pitchers with terrific potentials and 2 great potential pitches while 1 sucks in potential, so they dont get drafted highly, so i pick them in the 2nd or 3rd round and make them a starter so their pitches get better, and thus I get great pitchers in the rounds where the not so good players go. I guess that kind of pertains to the subject, but that happens usually because they're MRs and not SPs.

My draft last night was ONLY 10 pitchers (SP or MR or CL) taken in the first round. That just seems too few. You never know who will develop, so I like drafting a lot of pitchers and sifting through them down the road.
