According to Baseball Prospectus, pinch hitters struck out 23% more often than starters from 2000-2005.

Hitters get better every time they face a pitcher in a game so you would expect the first time you face a pitcher to have lower stats and more K. Pinch hitters also generally face tougher bullpen arms who collectively have better stats than starters.

I'd say it makes sense that they K more.

But I believe the game factors in the clutch factor. If the player tends to do better when the game is on the line, he might be a better pinch hittter.

Also, in real life, the batter is sitting on the bench doing basically nothing is cool from batting practice. Facing live pitching after doing nothing would make a hitter cool, that is why the good pinch hitters are raved about.

I wonder if work ethic plays a role, I remember someone pinch hitting and makeing the play of the game a few weeks ago. He said in his interview he had been in the batting cage keeping warm and ready to go when he was asked to come in.

on my redraft league (current mlb players, pooled and drafted among 30 teams), Clete Thomas is one of my bench players. I've pinch hit with him 14 times. He's k'd 7 of them and gotten 1 hit (which was a double). I'm wondering why I even bother anymore.

I have actually only used pinch hitters that have the ability to bunt for a hit. I don't even bother anymore with pinch hitters that can actually hit. Here's why.

I played out 2 full seasons so far and this is what I have for stats.

Season one I was not aware of this K thing all the time so I actually tried to use them. Had a total of 291 pinch hit at bats and had 22 hits for a .076 batting average. Of those times that the Pinch hitters tried, they struck out 227 times. I used everything I had, starters, backups minor leaguers. Everything.

So 2nd season I had 311 pinch hits with my new idea and I have 61 hits for a .196 average and only struck out 55 times. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

I don't want my pinch hitters to be perfect or anything but I would like some hits.

see thats what i'm getting at. 23% more k's for pinch hitters seems reasonable, but the numbers you described is where I'm heading, and that doesn't seem realistic.

ANd in a non-dh league, what sense does it make to pinch hit for a pitcher who has a 15% chance of getting a hit for a guy with a nominal .275 avg that truly has a 7% chance? More so, often you just need the pitcherspot to put the ball in play... which pinchhitters cant do in this game

so is this an actual problem that the powers should take a look at? because it seems from the data in the post above, it is currenly not realistic...

I think this needs to get attention. I'm sorry, but this game is so awesome, yet this one glitch is keeping me from fully becoming a crack fiend

If you believe that, then post down in Technical Support (probably with a link to this thread), and see if you can talk someone into giving you a BZ number.

I just looked up my teams cumulative stats for pinchhitting after 41 games.

48 at bats
6 hits
3 of which are doubles
1 rbi
2 bb
24 k's

just played a game, went into extras, runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out, my pitcher comes up... affeldt... hitting .000 on the year, prolly 1 or 2 abs... i felt like such a sucker when i put in hawpe (lefty) to pinch hit, against a righty... especially on one-pitch mode and the count comes up 2-2

WHIFF

this is a total bug/flaw in the game

I checked both historical and fictional leagues and in both cases I get pinch hit numbers similar to those in the attachment. So it would seem it may be attributable to some particular setting in your league. Can you think of anything you might have changed from the default settings for this league?
