The Art of Roster-Making

Once and for all, I'd like to know the secret to making roster sets. I find it difficult to imagine that they are all being created in-game via the player profile editors.

I've read that roster makers were using a "tool" during the beta phase. Is this true and if so, is there a version of it we unwashed masses could have access to?

And yes, I am aware of the export/import rosters function, but this limits my ability to manipulate Player IDs, which is what I'm really angling at here.

So, can anyone out there give me the skinny?

The there is a web-based tool.

That's above my paygrade. Chances are slim today. Apply for the OOTP 11 beta team, sign the NDA, and specify to work on roster team. You'll learn more than you ever cared to know about building players.

I will write something up and see if it gets cleared.

No. It was a polite way of saying that I think that there is no chance this happens soon.

I think in today's version of OOTP there really is not much of a need for roster makers anymore at least in the Historical Mod sense.

I can remember back to versions 4-6 especially where I made a TON of rosters and it really was an art form (at least in my twisted mind) as you needed to balance everything within the league for it to work correctly within the confines of the game engine. Where most roster makers went wrong was ignoring how the game ACTUALLY worked and they just "blindly" rated players but did not take into account the need to balance the whole universe so to speak.

Anyway, those days are long gone as the Lahman DB rating imports are light years better than in the past and unless you just want to have accurate jersey numbers or maybe pitch types, etc there is not much need for old timers like myself.

Yes, Doc, we are now officially dinosaurs.

If you're playing pre-1947 American baseball, then the All-American Mod (a namefiles/ethnicites/nation/cities file pack) is for you.

But those were some good times. I think some of the most fun I had with OOTP was making those roster sets!!

I would say we are not normal!

This is true. This is way there were certain things done in the roster set that seem wrong, but were done anyway.

The biggest example is Alex Rodriguez. He can't play SS. If you rate him as being a good SS, with 200 in experience, with good range and good turn double play, the AI will turn him into a SS, bench Jeter, then trade Jeter.

Is that the right thing to do? Well, maybe, but it won't happen for the Yankees any time soon.

Rating prospects is tough, too. You can get information from Baseball America that identifies the consensus prospects from all organizations. The trouble is their success rate. My local library has several of their guides from the last few years. Reading the reports retroactively is funny. They miss so often.

Well, anyways, I submitted a post last night on the roster web tool. It's rather long with three screenshots. Maybe battists will let me put it up soon. We have a lot of very good tools and processes in place to build rosters now, and learned a few lessons too. I hope the OOTP 11 set can improve due to this.

Well, Doc, you would be the best judge of that.

We did have a Hell of a lot of fun though.

Great idea! Obviously the AI has improved with this version!

NHL Eastside Hockey Manager has good Editor. You even sort by Drafted by Team that would help me out in this Game to do an updated one.
You probley also want Edit Standings so you can have them as of Today.

That would be great if you're allowed to share it. I would love to be able to use this to set up my fictional leagues, as I'm very meticulous about my fictional rosters. Also, I'm sure it would be a tremendous help to anyone who wants to create even partial rosters for my college universe.

Out of curiosity, what would the AI do if both Jeter and A-Rod are given the highest popularity ratings, or if Jeter is rated as slightly more popular? Wouldn't it go out of its way to accomodate both players, since trading an extremely popular player would cause fan interest to suffer?

I've actually thought of this before myself. It could be useful for mid-season or post-trade-deadline roster sets. That way, you're not just limited to preseason sets.

Looks like we're on the same page, mgom.
