I love trades like this

Okay, fictional league. I had a 2nd baseman that I was not going to be able to resign. He was fairly good, but not an all star. Maybe 50 on a scale of 80. I asked the worst team in the league for their 1st round draft pick. They said fine, but asked for a minor leaguie closer that had alot of upside in addition to my 2nd baseman. In order to get that pick, I said yes.

and then....

I went into the free agent list and guess what? They'd released my minor league closer the next day. I offered him a minor league contract and got him back. So I got my closer and a first pick all for a player that I wasn't going to be able to resign anyway.

I love it when things work out this way...

You should try this same trade in the newest patch that came out today and see if it works the same way.

Do you really love it when things work out that way or do you love it like you hate it. Because I would hate it, so much that I would go in and edit the guy I traded away to make him a little better for the team and make the trade more reasonable.

Um, no. I don't feel bad. Why? Andre Either for Milton Bradley. Do you think the A's would love a do-over button or a patch? Yes, I think so. Bad trades happen all the time and that one isn't the onluy example.

Give me one example of a team trading for a player and then releasing him the next day.

It does happen in the NBA for salary cap reasons. I can see trade and release if it makes financial sense for the team doing the releasing.

MLB is far from the NBA.

it would never make financial sense because the team still needs to pay the contracts. What this game needs is the ability to add a buyout to a contract...

It does make sense if the player the received is not in the teams plans and they acquired him to dump a much larger salary. But a buyout option would be nice. Or a mutual termination if a player thinks he can find a starting job somewhere else.

This definitely happens.... It sucks, but it happens. The AI should be forced into simulating the trade's aftermath and if any of the players received need to be released or waived to be demoted, then that player should be considered worthless when evaluating the talent in the trade.

I had a similar trade happen in the ABA league. Added a decent relief pitcher as a throw in to a trade and, same thing, he was promptly released by the other team. I picked him up and he's been my team's closer for two seasons. That was before I changed trading to "Hard."

I usually leave draft pick trading disabled, good idea poorly implemented. I find the AI is completely worthless as soon as any draft pick is inserted into the trade.
It's incredibly simplistic to trade for the first 5 picks in every draft and never give up anything of any value to you at all.
I'm not sure the AI views draft picks as having any inherent value, and they definitely don't seem to see much difference between a first overall selection and a hundredth overall selection in trade value.
