Ground Out vs. Fly Out

Which is preferable when reviewing a pitcher? Is a higher Ground Out % better than a low one, or vice versa? And what is the rationale behind the answer?

Groundball pitchers usually give up less home runs.

I agree with both posts above, and it also kind of depends on your defense. I look for groundball pitchers because I tend to highly value very good defensive middle infielders.

You may have 3 outfielders with a range of 9 our of 8, so you may want the fly ball pitchers, because really, a solo homer, is better than 8 singles in a row (which now that my starting SS is out, I tend to see a lot, lol).

These are both true. BABIP tends to be higher for GB pitchers. GB pitchers obviously induce more double plays as well.

I don't know that one or the other is preferable, though I tend to shy away from the high HR pitchers. They can be gas cans unless their control is outstanding or they get a lot of strikeouts.

So when looking at a box score does seeing the number of grounds out and fly outs a pitcher incurred really tell me anything? It doesn't tell me anything about the actual hits he gave up, only the ones he didn't, and may say more about his teammates than it does about him.

About like me. I almost always try to get a 2B/3B/SS combo that are excellent fielders. So, I do tend to want some wormkillers on my staff.
