Need Advice for Changes to players.csv

I may be going about this all wrong, but I was close enough to end up with a game with a bunch of Joes and players with no first names.

I want to change the BL column in my players.csv files - for many players - from 0s to 1s and then reimport that file into my game. But I haven't had any success doing it.

I have to go through a lot of Excel warnings as I save the file. Could the error be happening there? Could it be the version of Excel I'm using?

Could it be all the special characters that make foreign names, etc.. look odd in the csv tables?

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance. I'll give you any and all information you need to assist me in making this happen.

The real mission is I have about 800 players in the FA pool who are NOT in the Inaugural Draft pool and I "think" making this change in the BL column is what will move them there. I "think." I just can't get that far to be sure.

Again, grateful for any help and patience to anyone who can help.

EG, what error are you seeing when you try to re-import?

I've had some experience with the .csvs, as you know, and I've found that editing them in Excel and saving is generally a bad idea. Excel likes to convert the date format, among other things.

If you want to change an entire column, I recommend trying out TextPad. It's an awesome shareware text editor, but it's free to "evaluate" forever. With that, you can select columns and fill.

If you'd like, I can give it a whirl for you. Just email me the csv.

Thanks, Neags. I do have TextPad, just never thought about it as an alternative. When I've used Text editors, one difficulty I've always encountered is being able to locate the appropriate field to change, given it isn't as distinct in continous info on rows as it is in the row/column separation of Excel. Any hints there?

Not really, no. I usually end up having to just count.

Though, a good trick to getting the columns to line up is to do a search and replace on commas. Replace them with ", ". Just remember how many spaces you type in (I sometimes use 20 or so). Then, once you've got the columns lined up so it's not a big jumble, select the column to edit and do whatever you want with. Finally, do a search and replace the ", " with just a ",".

Yes and a couple of no's.

Yes, I think I understand. No, I won't be in front of the game until late tonight. In addition, I don't think - now - it will solve the problem I am trying to solve:

I'm at Inaugural Draft day - got there with a release all and schedule draft, but it didn't give me the day. It began that day. Now I have FAs who, for whatever reason, are in the FA pool, but not in the draft pool, and I want them there.

The BL column in players.csv looks - though I may be mistaken - to be a Draft Eligible cell. I hope that doesn't mean 1st year player, but even so it might not matter because, in essence, this is the 1st year as I've erased all service times and history. Theory was, that if I changed all the 0's to 1s for those players without teams (there's a college league) and then did an import, it may move the FAs to the Inaug.Draft pool.

In hindsight, given that it IS Draft Day, I think I'm forced to rationalize a workaround.

Oh, well. Thanks. I may try it for kicks and giggles later, though.

Whoa. Ok, hold on a minute.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you're trying to re-import the players.csv file that I assume you created using the "Export data to CSV files" button?

I was under the impression that it was still impossible to re-import these files back into the game. This, to me, has been the single most frustrating aspect of OOTP in recent years and my #1 request for fixing. I've even been bugging Tony M. to create a new version of his exporter/importer mod he build for OOTP8 for a while now, just to address this very issue.

So this is either a "Why It Probably Isn't Working For You" post or a "Holy Guacamole! You Mean You Can Actually Do This Now?!?" post.

If you're absolutely certain you can re-import the players.csv file now, then... understataement of the year here... cool!

Otherwise, I'm guessing this is why you haven't been able to get it to re-import successfully.

But yeah, let me know either way.

That. ^ But it's a trial in progress. Look, you me made me grin and frown in the same sentence. That's not easy.

What I'm looking for is a magic wand and there isn't one. Period. I'm going to run the draft and then take the first 64 players by POT and simply assign them to teams in the same draft order. That'll have to do.

Tony 'was' working on an imported in v9 and I left a note in that thread as well, but I'm starting to think it's a no-go in that area. Like you say, it'd be . . . cool.
