Continuing game with patches

Will all the patches' changes take affect on on a game started with the original game? I saw one reference saying that a game started with patch 1 would be fine with patch 2 or 3. But what happens to original games?

Updates to the game engine will change any existing game, but changes to the MLB roster only affect new games.
