Stealing Question

When you give a runner the order to steal (not Hit & Run or Run & Hit, just a standard Steal), what does the batter do? Will he always take the pitch, or will he swing if he thinks it's a good pitch to attempt a hit on?

He should always take the pitch.

He will always take the pitch in OOTP. BTW, that is one of the ways you can tell when the AI has called a H&R or a steal attempt. Distinguishing a steal attempt from a R&H is obviously more difficult, but one can make some good guesses about that.

Yes, he will always take the pitch - the moron.
Testing things out a while back I had the opposing pitcher rack up 27 Ks to see if my hitters were just that stupid... and they are.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. Could you clarify?

If the runner goes and the batter does not swing, it is a steal. If the runner goes and the batter swings, it's a hit and run.

Ok, that makes sense. But what will this information tell me? For example, if it's a foul ball on a Hit and Run should I anticipate another attempt? And does the PbP ever show the opponent's runners starting and then hesitating, as it does mine, which would also indicate a planned steal?

It doesn't appear in the pbp no. The hesitating line is just there for the human.

If you dump the pbp the AI occasionally has phantom SB attempts, where it says the guy is going but never a result and he never goes anywhere. It's sort of the same as the hesitating line you see in the pbp, but doesn't show up in the OOTP pbp window when you play. That was an odd thing we ran into a couple years ago before we figured out what it was.

So then, tactically, what do I gain by knowing that the opponent was stealing or Hit and Running?

You gain knowledge, and knowledge is power, and power is....

I don't know what you gain. Maybe SteveP is just a control freak that likes to know those things.

Ok. Works for me. I just thought I was missing out on something that might help me win a few games instead of losing most of them.
