As for a lot, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that sales have gone up in the version between 6.5 and X. No argument that 6.5 was the pinnacile of it's series, but like the Windows 9x version it's day has come and gone. Also anyone noticed that a thread about free software has turned into another "6.5 waz teh awesome! New thingz suck00rs!" thread? Guess free doesnt' make things better for some. On top of that, OOTP 6.5 frankly LOOKS old, doesn't run on Mac, and wasn't nearly as "feted" as OOTP 8 was. Steve

I intend to use this free OOTP 8 as bait for some of my friends whom I think should be OOTP'ers. Misguided fools, they have ignored my entreaties long enough. Now I will hook them good. This is how they will look when I am done with them:

FWIW I skipped a couple of versions, having versions 2, 3, 4, 5, 2006, 2007, and X, missing out on 6.5 and 9. I hear alot of good things about both of the versions Ive skipped, but since I dont have either one, I have gone back to 2007 while waiting for some things to get ironed out in X, and I am loving it. 2007 / 8 is a great version

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you. I had a hard time weaning myself off of 6.5 for the longest time. But then I joined a league (or two) that were using OOTP 9 and that finally forced me to use and get comfortable with the new interface, etc. Now I could never go back. I still have 6 & 6.5 installed, but I haven't played them since last fall. They're more like museum pieces now.

Playing around with this and it's frustrating
I created a 1901 MLB league with the Eastern League and Western Association as non affiliated 'A' ball leagues. Tried to do it with no players but that crashes the system, so I created fictional players I have to go in and change all the players who are not caucasian, change the coaches and managers of all 3 leagues...make sure no managers get fired and if they do rehire them... Plus, their is no easy career leaderboard like in 6.5. It is replaced with Cato, and I have a bunch of 1890 records :-( Plus no single game records. The added work involved almost makes it 'work' and not enjoyable...shame I do like the fact I no longer have to grab the Lahman and fix the players though |
