Computer turned itself off while OOTP was running, now OOTP crashes

My laptop has been playing up a little and occasionally turns itself off for little or no reason, the most recent time while I was running OOTP X. When I restarted the computer and started playing OOTP again it worked ok until I clicked on certain tabs from the team screen. Most of the other buttons and stuff seem to work, but it seems certain ones cause OOTP to crash.

I've tried un-installing and re-installing, and I'm using Windows Vista and the latest patch.

Got a Toshiba laptop by any chance?

Have you tried starting a new league? It's possible the one you were using got corrupted

Yeah, this seems likely. I hate losing leagues.

Nope, it's a HP laptop lol, which has habits of slightly overheating.

I tried making a new MLB game and it still did it on that. I will try a new custom league now.

Edit, tried that and it did the same thing.

The exact same thing has happened to me recently. I have followed the exact same steps you have to no avail. Portions of the game work perfectly fine but if you happen to click on certain links. It causes the game to crash. I have a PC and I am running XP. I can even play single games but the last time I did, I was up by 6 runs and wanted to make a substitution and the game crashed which mean I lost the game I was in the process of playing. I really wish there was an auto in-game save feature BTW. I really don't think this is a computer issue at this point since other people are experiencing the same things now.

Back up early and often! Zip up your leagues regularly - and don't wait between backups longer than the amount of game time that you are willing to lose!

Yeah, you just have to backup your league.

One of the major problems with OOTP is that shutting off your computer (or it shutting off on its own) without quitting OOTP can often corrupt the entire game, ruining all the leagues.

It's happened to me twice. Once, when I was lazy and shut my computer off without quitting and once when the computer ran out of power and shut off.

That doesn't explain why a new league does it though.

No, it doesn't. I guess I'm inclined to believe something else is afoul then. Unfortunately I don't have a clue what it could be.

I'd post something in the Tech Support area. Maybe another file that OOTP uses got corrupted. Or the OOTP corrupted file is not being deleted during the uninstall.

This is really strange. We're looking into it. Best would be if you could send your laptop our way...

I've had precisely the same thing happen to me with my Thinkpad. After losing the 3rd league, I now BACKUP all the time. Its a must.

I frankly don't know a thing about Vista, but if this were happening on XP I'd be tempted to guess that there's something being left behind in the registry even after you do a complete uninstall of OOTP. I had a problem once with the original Sims game. I had uninstalled the thing correctly but the game would not reinstall when I tried to put it back on my hard drive. I finally went into the registry and had to manually delete entries to the game that had been left behind despite the kosher uninstall. Once I did that the game re-installed properly. For those who know Vista, is it possible that something similar is going on that is causing the re-installed OOTP to crash; i.e. the uninstall is leaving something behind in the registry? Just a guess; sorry if I'm way off-base.

That makes sense. Obviously there's no easy way of telling.

Maybe Markus (or someone) can take a look at this and see if there's some debris being left behind during an OOTP Vista uninstall .......?

That would probably be the easiest way to check, yes.

I just recently (about two or three weeks ago) had this exact same situation happen to me. I was in the middle of writing a second Dynasty thread, and the crash really annoyed me. I was so frustrated after trying to reinstall and all that, that I was going to give up on OOTP altogether (clearly, a rash reaction from an annoyed me after having my second attempt at a dynasty foiled by a bug, lol). Ultimately though, my calmer head prevailed, and I finally found a solution to the problem.

Step 1) Uninstall OOTPX.
Step 2) Move the folders left over where OOTPX normally installs on your computer somewhere else (I saved them in a new folder called OOTP Backup).
Step 3) Reinstall

This should fix things for you. Once I made sure everything was running, I moved the save file of my franchise over and was able to resume right where I left off. No crashes, and that was two seasons ago. I hope that helps.
