I first purchased FM in 2005. As an American, it has taken me 5 years and 5 versions to finally really enjoy the game and also know what the hell is going on for the most part. This thread title was something I repeated every year when a new version of FM came out. But I stuck with it, I am glad that I did. I would highly recommend the game and try to use wikipedia for all your questions about the game of soccer and the whatever league you choose to manage in, as I learned a tremendous amount from it.

After reading this thread a few days ago, I downloaded the 'vanilla' version demo... that night I played for 3 hours, and only got done 2 regular season games. I managed to get Beckham from whoever, but he won't be on my team until his contract his up  .
I don't understand a lot of what is going on, the whole loaning of players for example. It seems like a fun management game, but I don't think I'd pay $40 for it right now, because it seems very complicated... hell I can only probably name under 5 soccer players (Beckham, Ronaldo, Adu... lol). |

I know, it took me about 6 months of playing with version 2006 before I became comfortable with the game. Not good mind you, just comfortable with a basic understanding. |

FM 2010 is pretty good, though i prefer FM 2007 or 2008 when it simpler to use and didnt have the crappy press conferences to deal with. Although it is much better than 2009. I dont use the 3d, cant stand it.

I actually play 2010 in 2D because it allows you to see the whole field and it is much easier to see how the other team is playing you so you can adjust your tactics. 2008 was the first version I played, but 2010 seems much better to me because the game engine isn't so exploitable. 2008 was pretty ridiculous in that regard. Plus the players on the pitch were just flat out dumber in that version. There is a better flow with this version, and the tactics wizard allows you to quickly set up a base from which to work from. Actually, it would be very easy for them to do the last 15 years or so...they've already done most of the data for all the major soccer leagues worldwide in previous incantations of the game.
going back to the early 80's I think would be relatively painless too - there's enough data for all the top levels easily accesible; But prior to that, yeah, I think it would start becoming a real effort to produce a decent roster set. |

yeah i've tried that, but he just angers the players all the time by making stupid comments. So i have to do them and hope i pick the right question. Half the time i praise the player he'll get mad lol

For years one of the things I [and others] asked for was a way for the community to easily create and add leagues. It's silly to rely on a slow, formal, company-sanctioned research group to add leagues, when fans all over the world know more about the leagues they watch than any organized group ever could. I [and others] got flamed for asking for an editor, because certain people in the FM community fear any type of change. But now an editor has been added, and the last time I visited the FM forum many people were very, very excited about using it and adding leagues that SI in its slowness never would get around to adding.

And FSC on Comcast will be going HD on March 1st, from what I've been hearing. Can't wait!
As for the original topic: I don't know if I agree or not. On one hand, I think baseball is easy enough to picture in your head based on the commentary - making a 3D match engine fairly unnecessary. But on the other hand, I said the same thing when playing Football Manager 2008, and then SI went and gave us 3D for 2009 and 2010... and I can't believe how much easier it is to judge your players from it. So, I see 3D being pretty unnecessary for OOTP. But I could be proven wrong if I actually saw it. |

Ah, soccer. What a thrilling sport. I watched a high school game last Friday and what I saw was a 3-0 blowout. Only in soccer is 3-0 a blowout.
What I found interesting is that neither goalie ever touched the ball. The 3 goals were scored without the goalie getting anywhere near the ball. Those were the only shots that were a threat to score. The other goalie never touched the ball because there was never a shot on the goal that got anywhere close to the goal. How wide is the goal? 20-25 feet? And no one could get the ball close? So, 3 shots on goal in the entire game. Wow. No wonder that sport has never really been accepted in the USA with it's sports fans who only care about scoring. What "talent" does one need to play soccer? Even I played it when I was younger. All you need is stamina, I can kick a ball nowhere near a goal or out of bounds all day long. Last edited by StyxNCa; 02-28-2010 at 09:27 AM. |
