OOTP X Name of the Week

I made the name files, so it's my own fault, but my new A first baseman is named Chase Dames.

This one's not even from the names database. It's a real-life example: Johnny Dickshot. Perhaps in the '30's and '40's the connotation that immediately comes to mind didn't exist? If it did, whoa boy, this poor guy must've suffered a lot of teasing throughout his life. Ugh! In the interests of completeness, his nickname was "Ugly". Ouch!

No lie, my 7th grade English teacher's name was "Richard Wacker". Of course we all just called him Dick Wacker.

It's amazing how OOTP points out the psychology behind names. Ive found Im less prone to acquire a player with a name I dont like even if he has the same talent as someone with a more interesting name.

I would assume real life GM's dont operate that way but they are only human too.

I once had two players named Pedro Flores on my team. Needless to say, things could get pretty confusing.

I'm a big Doctor Who fan. Using my new historical names file, where "Doctor" was seemed to have been documented as a first name by the census. (I found a guy who had a real given name of "Doctor.")

So in my first 700+ players generated:

Doctor Guess

I was so excited, I even showed the name to my wife.

Bill James became what he was by asking questions no one else would ask, and then answering them. Essentially he brought the scientific method to baseball, which was riddled with superstition at the time. Now it's only about 50% superstition.
