Roster Expansion Option Year Question

Just wondering if anyone has any guidance on these two questions.
If I have a RP in AAA all year who is on my 40 man roster, does he lose an option year if I call him up in September for the expanded rosters? I also have a SS in AAA that is not on the 40 man but if I call him up directly to the active roster does that use an option year?

from the manual....

"Players start out with 3 minor league option years. As soon as a player spends one day on the secondary roster without being on the active roster, he is considered to be on 'optional assignment.' The moment the player has spent one day in this scenario, he uses one of his three minor league options."

Ok so here's my understanding. If a guy goes straight to the ML roster on roster expansion then he doesn't lose an option year. He also doesn't lose an option year when demoted if in spring training.

So in my case if I brought up my 40 man rostered RP on Sept 1st, he doesn't lose an option year unless I send him down when the playoffs begin? I've kept him in AAA all year to prevent losing it but now it seems that when I bring him up its gone. What that would lead me to do would be to DFA a guy who is going to be a FA at the end of the year and keep him on until spring training and then demote him if I have to because then there is no loss of an option year. Am I gaming the system by doing that? Is this everyone else's understanding?

Sorry for the length of the post but any help would be appreciated.

I just ran a test on this so I think this is how the game handles this. If you bring a player up who hasn't been on the 40-man roster before Sept 1st, he will lose an option year if you send him down for the playoffs. If you do not, he will not. However, in most cases in OOTP X, if the player has been on the 40-man roster all year (i.e. since before Spring Training), you had to use an option year to demote the player after Spring Training to get down to a 25-man roster and so your player will not lose another option year if demoted after the season for the playoffs. So basically, if the player's been on the 40-man all year, he already lost the option year and there's harm in bringing him up.

You wouldn't be able to DFA someone like you described before the DFA list has a limited time frame (by default, 10 days) after which you'd have to put him back on the active roster, demote him, trade him, or release him.

Players use up an option year if they are on the 40-man roster and they play in the minor leagues. IRL, I think they have to be on the minor league roster for 20 days. I'm not 100% sure exactly of the OOTP implementation. Anyway, whether they are called up or not at any point is irrelevant.

The answer to the second part is no I think, because they were never on the 40-man roster while in the minor leagues.

Dutchman brings up a good point. If you send him back for the playoffs, I guess that may count as being an active minor leaguer and use up an option year. It probably shouldn't be that way, might would probably be tricky to implement.
