Trade deadline trades hard to mimic real life MLB
I like the way very low trade frequency works so I'm ok there, but one thing that no trade setting seems to get right are the deadline deals.
I see a lot of little trades whether it be vets, minor leaguers, whatever. But you never see Baltimore trade Brian Roberts when out of contention, or Jake Peavy, stuff like that. Not that I want a million stars moving around, but guys with expiring contracts should be dealt from time to time from a team out of contention to a team making a push for the playoffs. Has anyone been able to simulate this in a solo league?

Never. This is a real failing of the AI. When out of contention, they will rarely look to move serviceable or star players in the final year of their contract.
It's slightly better now that free agent and draft pick compensation works properly (and well), but the AI does not seem to realize--unlike real-life GMs--that they can get more value for a player by trading him rather than waiting and collecting the draft pick(s). |

I've read of people changing the trade settings for different points of the season, including the deadline. I have never personally tried it but thought it was an intriguing idea. I would think for the week or two before the deadline, you would want favor vets and like normal to high trade frequency to get it right.
But like I said, I never tried it.

Another area to potentially revisit, while looking at changing frequencies at specific intervals, is that of adjusting AI Evaluation settings to affect the valuation of players. Previous versions saw users like MD and others implementing dynamic settings. It may prove an interesting combination.
