I think mgom wants his seasons to follow MLB's exactly, including standings. So, uh, no simulation?

Surprisingly, someone already does something like this.

I think he's agreeing that it would be nice to be able to manually edit the standings and stats and other aspects of the game, so one could start up a new game at any point in the season.

I know a lot of mgom's suggestions get lost in translation, but I don't seriously believe this is what he's getting at.

The idea is to be able to start a simulation in the middle of a season without having to revert back to Opening Day. Currently, if you start up a new game with real MLB rosters at any point in the (real-life) season, you're stuck with Opening Day rosters. So even if OOTP is released in late June or if you don't purchase the game until after the trade deadline, you have no choice but to start back at Opening Day. If standings/stats/etc. could be edited, you could start at any date in the season you wanted.

Not only would this be cool for modern real-roster fans, think of what a boon it would be for historical aficionados. You could re-create pennant races or statistical battles throughout history. Perhaps modders would create midseason replays for specific years when notable events took place, like an epic end-of-season collapse.

Truthfully, it's not a huge deal to me either way. I have about a dozen other things I like to see added to OOTP before this. Nonetheless, I think it could open up a lot of very interesting possibilities that would engage many different types of simmers.

Actually that idea - as interpreted above - is a decent one. It would essentially be the equivalent of a scenario editor for a wargame.

The whole problem with OOTP is that I get the feeling as though I'm "watching" what's happening rather than being part of it.(outside a few roster moves) IN FM, I feel as though I'm part of what's happening with my club, and that I'm a large part of it.

Conceptually, its a reasonable idea, but not for the QuickStart. It would be fun to resim the Cubs 1969 and Mets 2007 collapses (although to be honest, there was probably so much bad luck involved in each, it would probably be difficult not to succeed where they failed).

But the QuickStart has thousands of players in it, from MLB to Rookie Ball. I'm assuming you don't want to start on August 1, 2009 with all the players with zero plate appearances and zero innings pitched. Where the heck is anyone getting the data for all those players? There are a few places online that do this kind of work, and none of them let the average fan download their entire DB.

That's essentially what I was saying.

When it comes to modders being able to go back and retrieve data for specific dates during a given season, you're probably right. It might just prove to be too difficult to do for past seasons.

However, if this data were updated as the season progressed, it wouldn't be very difficult at all to stay on top of. That is, if every week during the season, someone were to go through and update all the results for the previous week (at least at the MLB level) subscribers could then download the current up-to-date standings and stats as a starting point for new leagues. Of course, that would still be... what, about 90 games a week? So you'd probably wanna have a primary "results updater" on staff and maybe a few on the bench. But I'm sure if they got a cut, they wouldn't be hard to find.
