A "perfect" career! Five Thousand OPS!

Just finished my 17th year in my OOTP8 league. Play em all out, so time goes slow. To slow it down even further, at the end of every year (and on the first day of the year) when player retirements are announced, I always take the time to click on each one to get a look at their careers.

As I was doing this today, this guy really stood out. Drafted by Mets in 1901, he is retiring now after the 1917 season. All those years, he made it into ONE game. Back in 1913. And in that ONE game he had ONE AB. And yep, home run.

So he retires with a career 1.000 batting average, a career 4.000 slugging percentage, and a career 5.000 OPS! LOL, good thing he wasn't on my team. I think after hitting a home run in his first AB I would've had to play him at least SOME. And then I would've ruined a perfect career.

What I'd like to know is what the heck this guy has been DOING for the last 16 years!!!! He has 5 years of major league service and has only played in 1 game? And apparently has never come to bat in the minors. How did he even GET to the majors? Perez must have been a god in the locker room or something to hang around that long and do so little. I hope the AI in version X has been improved to the point where you wouldn't find guys like this taking up space year after year and never making a contribution. Well, ok, ONE contribution ..........

Maybe his league doesn't have any minor leagues, only the reserve roster. It is 1917 afterall.

Yeah, I have no minors, just a reserve roster. Sorry, I should've explained that. And also, even though the year is 1917, I use modern day PCM's and League Totals, so his one HR wasn't even more incredible had it occurred in more of a dead ball era.

I just thought it was cool. I check all retirees every year, and you find out some cool stuff. This one struck me enough to post. I was just sharing a neat OOTP accomplishment, which is why I didn't post in the OOTP8 forum, thought it was just a general cool thing rather than OOTP8 specific. It is wild though. Seventeen years. Seventeen years in the bigs and get ONE AB in ONE GAME. And hit a Home Run. Like the poster above said, this guy has one heckuva story for his grandkids!

EDIT: Oh, and the rating scale is 1-20. I forget that too. This game is so customizable you forget that the same numbers can mean vastly different things depending on your personal settings. All ratings 1-20 scale in that league.

And btw, toying around more and more with X, and I gotta say Markus & company did a helluva job. I can't wait to get me a real league going in that version. Bought 8, 9 and 10, and they're all pretty darned good. I'd like to see better AI (always), but I do believe this is the best baseball simulation out there right now. Hands down. I've had lots of hours of enjoyment with all three, 8, 9, and X.

I'd STILL like to know how this guy managed to pick up 5 years of major league service with one AB the whole time. I'm not seeing any fielding ratings in his profile. Am I missing something again? Did this player HAVE any fielding ratings? Just trying to figure out how that kind of career could occur. I see he was a good runner, so maybe that kept him around. Only one inning in the field too. Sure is an odd one, but very cool that he went yard in his only opportunity.

Huh, never noticed that before. Just went through all of my retirees and none of them show any fielding ratings. They show the words "Fielding Ratings" just like above, but none have any ratings under the words.

OOTP8 bug maybe?? I dunno. FWIW, his OF Range is 7, his OF Error is 16, and his OF Arm is 18 (I got all this from his Profile page. But it doesn't show up on the Player Page. Weird.

As to how he could have nearly 6 years MLB Service time with only one AB, well, I guess he was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy down at the end of the bench. Maybe he dated the manager's daughter???

Anyways, like I said. I do this every year. Oh, almost forgot, in 1917 a pitcher reached 300 wins for the first time in this league. He didn't retire yet either, so I guess he'll add on. (He's not on my team) I just love going over stuff like this. And when I saw this guy, well, it's still pretty cool, IMO.

A bit off topic, but how do you see all the players who retired that year? Or do you look at all the retired players, and remember the ones the ones that are new to the list?

By looking on the All Transaction page on the two days that retirements occur. In OOTP8, all retirements occur on that day after the playoffs are over and it "resets" to the next year AND on January 1st. So, I just pull up the All Transactions page, and go down the list of all who retired that day.

Ahh, cool, I didn't realize that. Thanks. Unfortunately when I look over the almanacs I created, they only cover the retirees post playoffs, it doesn't seem to store the transaction record all the way back to January. But now I know for the future. Again, thanks.

Closest I came to something like this was in OOTP9, where a 28 year old minor league journeyman came up as an injury replacement....and pitched a no-hitter in his first major league start.

Unfortunately for him, he continued to pitch

A really clever guy would have quit right after that game and been a legend forever.

I don't think I'd classify a minor league journeyman who would choose to give up the potential for at least a few major league paychecks as "a clever guy."

I think I'd settle for falling into the very exclusive category of "no-hitter in first MLB start" which I believe hasn't been done in over 50 years. Then I'd make an attempt at actually having a couple more decent starts.
