Question about getting a hold
Can a player get credit for a hold if he does not retire a batter? Looking through my minor leagues, I saw a AAA pitcher who had been credited with a hold while having 0.0 IP. I looked through the box scores of the games and saw that he had faced one batter and given up an RBI double, yet he still got credit for a hold. Is this accurate?
Thanks, James |

Holds don't seem to be consistently define, and since they aren't an official statistic (blown saves aren't either, but they're easier to define) there isn't really a right or wrong answer.

When STATS Inc had the box score rights for USA Today they defined a hold as requiring an out.
In 1994 they lost those rights to SportsTicker who redefined the hold to be "comes in with a save situation and leaves in a save situation" (ie, you could be 3 up and walk a batter and give up a home run and leave the game and still have a hold)

Fun fact: Alan Embree got a hold in Colorado this season without throwing a pitch!

When the hold stat was first created, the definition was: "A hold is credited any time a relief pitcher enters a game in a Save Situation, records at least one out, and leaves the game never having relinquished the lead."
This is, as far as I know, still the official definition.

Just so no one explodes with curiosity, Embree came into a two-out game and picked Austin Kearns off first for the third out before ever throwing a pitch. The Rockies then scored a run in their next ups, and then Embree was replaced by Huston Street, who got the save, so Embree never threw a single pitch, but still got the win.
Nice work if you can get it.
