Expansion Assistance
Hi all,
I'm going to do an expansion of my league once the current season is done. However, I want to do the expansion draft, then the amateur draft (which in my league is held in November). Am I correct in understanding the proper way to do this is after the season and playoffs are all done, go to the expansion button, run the expansion draft immediately, and then it will proceed to my amateur draft? I just don't want to mess this up. Thanks. |

The most important thing to do is a full league backup.
Doing a test run on a 2nd copy of the league is always beneficial as well. It isn't necessary to copy every single file to run a test league, only the .dat files are required (quite a bit of time savings). Anyway, here's the basic process I follow whenever I expand. - Advance to the day players file for free agency. You don't want the expansion teams blowing picks on guys who are going to immediately become free agents. Now would be a good time to make that full backup. - Set the "don't allow CPU roster changes" function. This prevents the expansion teams from offering a ton of free agent contracts immediately after being created, as they tend to have a huge amount of budget room available (will edit their budget after the draft). - Run the expansion. Keep in mind when setting the number of protected players that many of the good players don't require protecting since they're already free agents. I tend to protect fewer players when holding an expansion at this time of year. - Manually adjust the budgets of the expansion teams. I don't like the expansion teams being able to sign as many of the top free agents as they want right away. Determine a fair figure, enough to allow them to sign maybe one big name guy plus an additional smaller signing or two. I re-adjust them manually at the end of the next couple of seasons, then allow nature to take its course. - Re-enable the CPU's ability to make roster changes. <---- Don't forget this, I have. - Play game. |

Excellent advice. Make a copy of your league in its current state and stash it away before you do ANYTHING else.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely save a backup...but my amateur draft will occur before the FA filing starts. Guess that works to my advantage.
I'll run some tests on a secondary version to make sure all goes smoothly. |

You can definitely expand outside the preseason. I usually expand in January (my preseason begins in March).

It's never a good idea to expand or contract outside the preseason though. It really screws up history.

Which history issues are those?
The only history problem I've noticed was when I added a completely new sub-league (started with 1, added a 2nd), the past champions didn't display properly on the main history index. |

yes, I'm curious also. I wait until January because I wan't the league history to show the team years properly (which on January 1 it does). I'm playing with a simple structure, though ... one major league with one associated minor league. I intend on making the league more complex, so I certainly want to know of issues.

For instance, when I remove a team in the 2009-10 offseason, they do not show up as having played in 2009, which also messes with player history, league standings, etc.
The same thing happens when I expand as well; therefore I put my draft on opening day when I expand.

I could see how removing a team would cause problems with the history, but I still don't see where expansion causes a problem. What is it that's getting messed up? Or am I just not paying close enough attention to the history pages?

It seems that if you do it in the offseason it looks odd on screen as it inserts the new team into the standings. However, in the Almanac, the team doesn't appear. So it's cosmetic, at least from what I saw when I tested it earlier.

I have done it many times and your history will not be effected. You can back it up in case something weird happens but in your history pages the team won't show up in the past season's standings.
