Historical Rookie Import
Is there a way to import players in the year they were drafted instead of the year in which they made their MLB debut?
This way guys could move up through the system instead of being MLB ready immediately. |

Well regardless of how the get into the league, I'd like to be able to import players at their professional debut and not wait until their MLB debut. Having to wait until the MLB debut kind of makes the minor league system useless or just a holding tank for players and not really a full development system.

Just for clarity, there is no setting in the game to do this though. The Lahman dbase that comes with the game only has debut date.

Maybe it was the Garlon dbase that imported by draft year, but I think he stopped publishing his. I'll search around on this over lunch.

Thanks guys I appreciate the investigative efforts. Let me explain a bit about the league I'd like to create, I'm actually not sure if it's possible.
* Starting year=1984 * All pro players (MLB and all minor leaguers) * Start with all players as free agents and have a huge free agent signing period instead of an inaugural draft (I'm not sure if this part is possible either) * Import the draft class every year (into a draft, not automatically assigned) * don't update ratings based on real life, let guys progress as fictional OOTP players would Essentially that's all the stuff I'm not sure how to or whether I can do in OOTP. Any help would be appreciated greatly. |

Well, some of that is definitely doable:
You can definitely start in 1984. The database that comes with the game does not contain minor league players (as I'm sure you've noticed). I'm sure the Gambo and Spritze dbases (downloadable from PadreFan's website - see sticky in the mod forum) are more complete, but probably don't have ever professional player in 1984. But that is all there is unless you want to manually add players. You can start with all players as free agents. After you create the league, there is a function in the League Setup area that releases all players to free agency. Just be advised that the game will start on Jan 1 so there will indeed be a lot of activity and not tons of time to do it. You have the option of importing the class to a draft (i.e. turn amateur draft on). There is a check box for this somewhere in the advanced league setup when you are creating your league. If amateur draft is turned off, then players import directly to the team the played on in real life. Your last bullet (the 'don't update ratings' part) is controlled by something called recalc in OOTP. There is a part of the league creation that controls this (here is the manual section for it: OOTP Baseball Manual - Options Page). You want to make sure the 'recalc player ratings...' option is not checked. Then players will develop based on the OOTP development engine instead of how they did in real life. P.S. I looked a little about the dbases with draft day imports, but couldn't find anything substantive. Sorry. I know there used to be one, but it could have been a couple versions ago. Spritze and Gambo both have mod dbases posted on the PadreFan site. Try them and see. Also they might have readme files that contain more info on what they contain.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.
I was kind of curious about the release everyone to FA idea without a draft. I wasn't sure if that was doable. I wonder how the AI will react to that though. Will I get all the good players because I'll offer them contracts first or will the AI understand the urgency to sign guys? |

![]() My guess is the game will handle the major leagues OK. The minor leaguers will probably a different story - the game doesn't always handle competing offers of the same value very well.

I think it may work if you setup your league and then add 1 year to every player's debut year except for the players in the inaugural draft. Making sure your draft is in June of the following year. If its march you would get fictional players.
Example. I set up my league in 1871. I added 1 year to all debuts except players who debuted in 1871. So a player debuted in 1872 is now 1873. I set the draft for June 1872 instead of 1871. When i get to the 1872 draft i guess the game thinks its drafting for 1873 but its really players who debuted in 1872. So now it will say the player was drafted in 1872 and it will match when the player had his first real stats. Well anyways that seems to work so far. Never mind. The game will add a players real stats to his sim stats for his first year when you do this. Last edited by BaseballMan; 02-16-2010 at 08:42 PM. |
