Question about roster moves

Just bought the game a few days ago and playing through my first season. I'm confused on how the whole shuttling players around works.

When I try to move a player from the DL to AAA as an example it says I need to activate the player.
(?) Is the only way to activate a player to place them on the 40 man roster and then the major league roster prior to moving them to AAA?

I'm running into other issues where I get multiple injuries and then have to call up AAA players to fill roster holes on the 25 man roster. Then, when the DL players come back I don't have enough room on the 40 mans to "put them back on the active 25 man roster" and can't remove anyone without putting them on waivers. Seems every time I do this the only option it gives me is for irrevocable waivers and then I lose the player.

Any suggestions on this?

Oh, just reached September with expanded rosters. How does that play a role with these moves?

God but I'm rusty with this game..lol.

1). I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you have to place an injured player on the major league roster before you can demote them. Kind of dumb, but that's the way it works. You can just DFA some random bench player, place the player on the 25 man, demote them, and then put back the DFAd player.

2). The reason you have to put those players on waivers before you can demote them is because they are out of minor league options. I'm not an expert, but basically, any time a player is moved between the major leagues and minor leagues, one of his minor league options is used for that season. All players receive three minor league options at the beginning of their careers at the default setting. To be clear, an option is used only once a season, meaning that you can shuffle a player between the majors and minors as many times as necessary during the season, and only one option will be used for that season. Once a player is out of options (i.e. three seasons), he can not be demoted without being exposed to irrevocable waivers.

Hope this helps.
