Player strategy effect on playing out games?

I'm wondering if setting Player Strategy for individual players on your roster has any effect when you actually play out all of your games. Specifically, "Baserunning" strategy. For example, every once in a while I'm faced with the all-too-aggravating base hit with a runner on second base only to have him be stopped at third. If I were to change my settings to have my baserunners be more aggressive, will I see more runners trying to score?

I know the online manual states for Overall Strategy that, "If you plan on playing out your games, there is no need to configure your strategy settings!" Does this hold true for Player Strategy as well?

This is a great question.

I would think it would make a difference in base running aggressiveness since as managers we have no control over whether or not to send a runner.

The bold surprises me. Since we don't have a "take an extra base" button I thought that individual player strategy would determine the level of base running aggressiveness when playing out games. I set each base runner up according to ability for that purpose. If that's the case then I would join those who want that element back in the game controls.

This is a great question. I really love the realism of not having a choice of whether to send a runner or not. This is the work of my coaches. But, telling players to be more aggressive or not would be an intriguing feature. My guess is that as currently programmed a baserunner's decision making is determined by his baserunning ratings. Bad baserunners will be aggressive at questionable times and get caught, good baserunners will take a few extra bases over the course of the season. The vast majority of baserunning decisions, however, are really not that questionable. I think this reflects real life. It is very rare for their to be question about how many bases a player should have advanced on any particular play.

Baserunning aggressiveness is the one slider that is always operational, whether you control other play-by-play behavior or not. This is true for both the team slider and the individual player slider. This is because you can't control baserunning behavior no matter how you play. Only the AI controls this, and the sliders are the only way to influence the AI

SteveP is on the money. You definitely need to set you baserunning sliders, especially in a more modern setting, to get your players to advance 1st-3rd and 2nd-home regularly.

But unless the human manager wants yet another advantage over the AI (like we need that), we have to set the sliders to more aggresive for all teams, not just the one we control. Doing that for every player in the league is way beyond what I'd consider reasonable, so the team sliders are the only decent way to go. It would be nice if at some point the game simply made the runners a little more aggresive in certain situations (like 2nd to home on a single) without recourse to sliders. Failing that, might be good to have a League slider that would exert some influence over all teams in a league without needing to adjust individual teams. That could also be useful in era-specific situations, like recreating the "scientific" ball of McGraw & co. (more aggresive) or the station to station ball of the '50's (less aggresive). Just a thought ......
