Notepad help
I finally was able to edit the era_ballparks file as i want it. I made every ballpark have the same factors and dimensions for each year. Problem is that that my edited one has " before each year instead of that symbol the original has. Im guessing that symbol has something to do with tab or line break?
Anyways can someone tell me how to make mine the same format? I can send you the file if you need to see the one i made. I did take a few ballparks and tested it and they did import ok but i would like to know how to do the whole file at once. |

The txt file you are editing is really a csv file with a txt extension. Use the import function in Excel and then choose comma deliminated in the wizard. That should set you up.
When done save your file as a csv file and change the file extension to txt from a command prompt. |

Editing those types of files with Notepad is a disastrous task, just waiting for errors like those that you experienced.
For me the best way to do this is as follows. (Make sure to backup your original era_ballparks.txt file before starting.) 1) Open era_ballparks.txt (or whichever) with Notepad 2) Save it as era_ballparks.csv 3) Open era_ballparks.csv with Microsoft Excel (or OpenOffice Calc, etc.) 4) Make changes 5) Save era_ballparks.csv 6) Open era_ballparks.csv with Notepad 7) Save it as era_ballparks.txt EDIT: Or just as Spritze said... |

I guess i didnt explain very well or most likely dont understand cause its not working. I already made all the changes i wanted to make. I opened excel and imported the original then made my changes and i merge cells into one cell for each row. So i guess thats where the " comes from.
But when i open it up in excel they are no longer the " is no longer there so i cant take them out.Do i need to unmerge the cells? If so im not sure how to do that. Should i send the file so you can compare it to the original? Its only 356kb. Basically i want to replace all the " with what the original file has. |

Unmerge the merged cells if you can as merging is iminical to your success, one should never merge cells with anyone at any time for any reason, you need to have an abundance of unmerged cells in your spreadsheet and then merely saving your sheet as a csv will do the proper formatting for you unbidden and automagically.

Ah the hell with it. I give up. Ill just do it manually. If i dont merge the cells it has big column spaces in notepad and wont work. Merging was the only way i could get it to look the same as the one in the game. Either that or paste the park.dat file each year. Its just that i made the ballpark file to match all the changes in my teams file.

Open it with Notepad. Select 'Replace'.
Replace " with (nothing) type " in the first area and don't type anything in the second area. That will replace all " with <nothing> Save. |

Thanks for the help.
The replace " worked. I had to go back into excel to delete an extra column. Forgot i had the year twice cause i needed to match the year with the team and ballpark when i was editing the file. I then saved as csv. I opened it back up in notepad, saved as a text and copied it to the ootp folder. Looks like it the teams and ballparks are matching. The avg, 2b , 3b, hr factors are not the same but i figure it does the same thing for every team so its not favoring any ballpark. I just mostly use the stats from that ballpark data file and maybe a little bit from my ballpark books. For where there was no attendance i just took the total capacity and times it by 81 games. Most of those teams wont be around long in my league so i dont think a larger attendance will effect their market that much. Anyways thanks for the help. Seems simple now but i was trying to replace the " with that symbol from the original thats the end of each line which i guess i didnt actually need to do. I didnt need to merge the cells just save as csv and then as text. Wasnt sure if it would work as a csv since all the other files look like test files in the database folder. |

glad it worked out for baseball man.
While we are on the subject of file extensions... Whats the method for editing a schedule? When I open it in excel, I get some XML options, which I am not familiar with. Is there a method to edit schedules using excel, or should I be using a different program? |
