Signing a Type A free agent

At what point in time does a free agent lose their Type A or B status?

i.e. how long would I have to wait to sign a Type A player so that I would not lose my first round pick? or does the Type A status never expire?

I'm thinking that the Type A status would expire after the draft (June), but I just would like to be sure.

Thanks in advance for any help!

i believe it doesnt expire. I cut a player who was a Type A in mid september and he was signed the day the playoffs began and i got Type A compensation.

In earlier versions the Compensation type did not expire until they were signed by another team or retired.

In a later patch, it was changed to now expire after the amateur draft is completed, compensation is no longer carried over season to season.

I'm not sure why someone would receive compensation for a player that was released as in damien's case. That particular case sounds like a bug to me.

If the bolded is the case - and the ammy draft is the ONLY "compensation reset", then I can see it happening. Depending on when his draft is. IE, if he drafts in December - and signed the player in the offseason last January; he'd still have the tag until passing the draft.

idk, just tossin out a thought before it's deemed a "bug".

That said, if that is indeed the case, and the ONLY reset is the draft passing - it should be changed to player signs or ammy draft passes.

He said he released the player. In order for a team to get compensation, it has to be a player that the team kept and offered arbitration to but chose to go to free agency on their own.

A released player shouldn't give a team compensation, that is the bug in that scenario. (I haven't seen that happen before, but if it happened for Damien, I would qualify it as a bug.)

I can't help the current discussion much, but I have another question regarding the compensation picks.

Is there a way to track the compensation picks as a commish in an online league?

I know the GMs get a message, but I was wondering if the commish has a tool to keep track of it?

No unfortunately there is not an easy way.

The only way I've been able to do it is manually have a script to run through the text message files on my server to look for the word Compensation and hand me that information. That is how I was able to find some of the earlier Compensation bugs that were fixed.
