Running split season with odd number of divisions

I am thinking about having a league with 4 team divisions, 3 per subleague. I want the playoffs to be fairly wide open, so there is more a tournament style ending to things than a league where the playoffs are exclusive to a couple teams lucky enough to get there.

What I don't know is what is going to happen if I have 3 divisions and a split season schedule. According to what I've seen of split seasons, usually 6 teams would make the playoffs. Obviously the OOTP playoff engine cannot handle just 6 teams, so I'm wondering if the engine will just pick 8 teams to fill the playoff field, or if the game will not be able to handle the split season option at all with 3 divisions.

If anyone has some experience with this, please share what you found.

Well, I did what I usually do after posting these kinds of queries and realize that I can test these out for myself. From what I have seen, it is impossible to run split seasons with odd divisions, but I can achieve similar wide-open playoff results by enabling custom playoffs.

IIRC, I though it added wildcards if you did split-season with an odd # of divisions, but I guess not.

OOTP does not allow wild card playoff qualifiers when using the split-season format. Consequently, the split-season format can only be used when there is an even number of divisions.

Perhaps some day this will change to allow more flexibility (and realism, since wild card qualifiers have been, and still are, used in conjunction with the split-season format).
