How hard would this be to do
How hard would it be to have the game retire a player when it has no real stats for that year and then bring the player back when it does?
Right now i use 2 files. One has all the players that have no stats for the next year. I call it the retire file and i use it to retire those players right after the award selewctions. Then i use a file i call unretire. I use it on Jan 1st of the new season to unretire players that are retired but have real stats for the current season. This way i can have Joe Dimaggio & Ted Williams play the same amount of time they did in real life. I dont know if any other historical player would like it but i was just wondering if it would be something that would be easy to get the game to do or if it would take a lot of time. I just thought it would help the historical play. |

Obviously Markus would have to answer this, but considering that the game can already retire players by detecting that they no longer have season stats in the database, I have to think that a reverse of this could be implemented by letting the game detect that the player suddenly has stats again. And I think there would be historical players that would like this feature for the purpose you mentioned, which sounds like reflecting the absence of players during the war years.
However, here is where I think it would be a problem: there are many players who disappeared for a season or two, or even sometimes three or four, and later returned. But they were in the minor leagues and not absent due to military commitments. So if you turned on a feature like this, it would not be able to make the necessary distinction and would end up 'retiring' other players who might have otherwise been able to play based on a 3-year recalculation and AI roster decisions. Now, if you want to restrict all players to playing only in the seasons when they were actually on MLB rosters, then this wouldn't be an issue for you. But I guess I've made the assumption that you're mostly focused on the issue of players during the war years. Personally, if I was going to run a historical league through the World War II period, I would want this feature, because it would reflect the realities that teams faced. But, to be completely realistic, there would also have to be adjustments to attendance and probably ticket prices, etc. |

Are you doing this just for the war periods?

No im doing it for any player that had a gap in his career. Even if the player had multiple gaps. Like say a player retired in 1873, unretired in 1875, retired again in 1884 and came back in 1904. It will be interesting to see a player like Satchel Paige come back at his age but will the recalc look back at the last 3 years from the players current real season or the last 3 seasons in which he had real stats?
Like player John played 98 games in 1990, 0 in 1989, 0 in 1988, 45 in 1987. and Bob played in 98 games in 1990, 45 in 1989, 57 in 1988, 35 in 1987. Based on a 3 yr recalc which player does the game use? Because on one hand a player could be in his fifties but if his last 3 years were good in real life he might be better than he should be or if its like player John than he may be worse than he should be. But anyway i couldnt stand seeing players playing way better than they should because of no real stats in the year that i was currently simming. |
