new pitch

I have found that despite having necassarry stamina, guys to not translate into solid starters unless they have more than two pitches. Is there any way to have a pitcher develop new pitch?

Young players have a chance to develop pitches. Once they get past a certain age, I think that likely goes away. I think it mostly happens randomly.

And yes, your initial statement is correct - pitchers need more than just the necessary stamina to be effective.

yeah, i experimented with two pitchers who had only 2 pitches. One is doing pretty well as a starter, but he has a fastball rating of 107. Other guy just got moved back to closer. Lucky for me, i just signed him to a cheap long-term contract that he would have never accepted had he been listed as a starter

not sure if it is a bug or by design, but it seems if one of the pitches is a knuckle ball (and he has good stamina) then he makes a good starter

By design - knuckleballers are exceptions.

As a matter of interest if a guy has a knuckleball that's 20/20 then does he only need that one pitch to be able to start?

I'm not sure, though I don't think the game creates any pitchers with one pitch.

no offense meant, but is this just your observation or are you privy to insider knowledge?

Well, there is really only one guy with insider knowledge, so since I'm not Markus...it's from experience. So I'll qualify it - I think it is by design.

It has been discussed some before. This is the only reference I could find off hand...
