Rust on The Player

I run an 8 team league in God mode. I make the trades, draft choices, lineups, and play out every game from the 5th inning on.

While setting lineups, I got to wondering about rust on certain players. Can anyone expand on the "rust factor"? I searched, but didn't find anything.

P.S. I know to some playing in God mode seems daunting, but I highly encourage you to try it out. Once you get a handle on the players in the league, the stories grow exponentially. And you still have the challenge of GM. You just GM every team.

Thanks for the help.

I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for your question, but I also play god mode and I think it is fantastic.

I don't know the exact algorithims but if you keep a guy on the bench for a while and don't play him, his ratings will be temporarily affected until you do get him into a game or two. I think it can also affect injury frequency; that appears to be why there's an increase in injuries when a guy comes back from a major one and at the beginning of spring training.

What exactly is god mode?

If you control all of the teams how exactly do you win or judge your performance?

Hey, Robc.

I don't really play OOTP to "win". I still play softball and basketball and chess for that. I follow sports for the stories, the drama. Actually, you do judge your performance, though, by seeing how the trades, line-ups and drafts bear fruit-- if they do at all.

In God-mode, you're God. You're over-seeing the whole league to whatever extent you desire. I do develop favorite players. I try to adopt the Umpire attitude toward teams when I'm drafting, trading, setting line-ups. Sometimes, when I'm unsure whether a team would trade this player, or draft that one, I'll roll dice. If it seems likely a trade will go, I'll say 2-10 is a trade, 11,12 is a trade rejected.

It's not too hard, since we all have expectations of what's "realistic".

So, I play in God-mode for the drama, the stories, rather than the "win". I win by presiding over a universe of players trying to "win".

Ahh, I see. Thank you for the explanation. It is interesting to see the different ways people get enjoyment from the same game.

I've always meant to try God mode, it looks like loads of fun, but I never got around to it

I have no interest in God mode. Like was said above, it's pretty neat to say all of the different ways people can get enjoyment out of the same game.

I play God mode as well, play each and every single game out from the 7th inning on (this is also how Eugene Church plays, so I like to call this Eugene Churching when I do so). I'm more interested in experiencing baseball as a whole for the era I'm playing in (right now my pet project is set in the 30s but in the past I've run deadball era leagues and stuff from the 80s) than winning or losing. I also enjoy - my geek reveal starts now - the role-playing aspect of things with all the teams.

I don't play in God mode, but when I'm managing whatever team I've chosen to manage, I am also more interested in the stories and drama than in 'winning.' That is why 'can't get fired' mode is all-important to me.

Thanks, Syd, for the explanation of player 'rust.' I've always wondered about that.

Does it also apply to pitchers?

In real life you often hear about a relief pitcher being sent in to 'get a couple innings of work.' I wonder if OOTP relievers also need an inning or two every now and then in order to stay sharp.

I also wonder if other players 'need a day off' once in a while. I know catchers get fatigued and need time off. My other players never seem to get tired.

Put another way. You should play subs from time to time to keep them sharp. I look at the upcoming pitchers and sub in where I think it works best.

Hmmm... I've been playing other games for a while and thought about playing OOTP tonight. Now you have me wanting to do this "God Mode".
