Well, I'm ok with being over this league. I've settled down a lot, and as I said earlier was getting ready to start a new OOTPX league anyway. As you can see from the pic, I purchased 8, 9, and X.
I'm over that league, but the reason I posted was because I'm wondering if others have seen this corruption in other versions. Like I said, OOTP9, and OOTPX, are basically just OOTP8 with new features added. If this "problem" was never noticed, I would hate to get into my OOTPX league only to have it happen again. And endgame, you've given me an idea, especially since I got this huge stack of blank CD's as a gift. I'm going to burn that big save I do every year onto a CD in my new league. Don't know why I didn't before. As I said, I would copy it to my USB drive, but each March 1st I would replace the old backup with a new one. Anyways, thanks again for the kind words. And if ANYONE has seen this corruption occur in other versions PLEASE POST HERE. Thanks again to all, and again sorry for posting it in OOTP11 (I meant to post it in OOTP10). Joe OldFatGuy

No problem on the off-post, OFG. You're a standup guy - though I'd argue that you're never really settled down
- who's usually concerned with the game getting it right. That's good motivation and motivates others to help.FWIW, the vast majority of league-terminating problems, whether they be corruptions of sorts, data corruptions, user error, etc... IMHO are nearly all pre-patch 9 and before.

Didn't Markus announce that the saving system in OOTPX was much better and reliable then the previous versions?
I seen the odd name duplications (versions before X) before but I just deleted them. Last edited by BusterKing; 03-08-2010 at 12:30 AM. |

OFG ; how do you name your backups? Is each one named differently?
How often is the computer used? installs of programs, uninstalls of programs? Drive size? Operating system? Vista/2003+ have a service called shadow copy(timed backup done without you knowing about it). It is really not advertised as a big feature. But it has saved me many a time. If you have them named differently, say including a date in the backup, and if you just deleted them. You can -sometimes- retrieve deleted files. As a network tech, i do it daily 8) Now, that said, if the drive is used for lots of other uses, the data may be lost even if your names are unique. Let me know about the file names, IF they do share the exact same name, the data would probably be lost. |

I'm sorry, OFG, that I can't offer any help. I've lost many leagues over the years to hard drive problems, etc. It is very frustrating, after putting so much effort into it.
But I can tell you what others have said: starting a new league can help soothe the frustration of losing the old one.

Hey OFG,
Sorry to hear about that loss. Sent shivers up my spine as I'm getting overly fond of my fictional universe. I think I may be falling in love.... If the game corrupted, could you save the players, their ratings and the teams and just go from there? I'm probably not thinking this thru. Then again, I get up at 4 a.m. for work.... and the brain doesn't have its first cup of coffee til about 5:30 a.m. What could someone do if a game crashed, but they were willing to go on with a new game if they could save the names and ratings of the players from the old league? Spread-sheet or something? Last edited by knockahoma; 03-18-2010 at 07:17 AM. |

I was thinking about this a little more since my brain woke up and joined me.
Brain: What the hell were you thinking on that last post? I told you not to go anywhere without me. Knock: I was just making a suggestion. Trying to think what's really important in simulated life, you know. Brain: Did you make this coffee? Knock: It tasted okay before you woke up. Brain: Alright. Let's flesh this out. First off, there's the psychological aspect. You're a historical creature. You look to the past all the time. Knock: Yeah. Why is that? Brain: It has to do with when your ancestors. Everything does. Knock: Right. The monkees. Brain: Noooooo.... you share a common ancestor with monkees. To understand the basic concept of ancestry, think of a tree with different branches. Knock: Like a christmas tree? Brain: Forget it. Look, psychologically, OOTPers-- at least you-- grow fond of the players. Think of a monkey and its favorite banana tree. What's the monkee really love, the tree or the bananas? What if the monkey saved all the bananas before the big forest fire? So, in your foggy, earlier post, you were suggesting that in a crash, you have a physical backup-- on paper-- of your players. If need be, you could even edit them back to their basic abilities. If you've got to move into a new OOTP universe, at least you can take your friends along. Just make up some story about asteroids hitting the earth-- or maybe a huge financial crisis based on health care decimated the league. The old owners are gone. New ones come in. New team names. New uniforms. But the draft pool of the old players remain. You might not have Hank Aaron's records, but you still have the Hammer in the new league. Actually, such a new league would be quite dramatic. Imagine your favorite player drafted to another team, thru no fault of your own, but thru the stupidity of the former league's financial collapse. Mmmmm.... what the hell is wrong with this coffee? Knock: Forgot to put in the filter. Last edited by knockahoma; 03-18-2010 at 07:18 AM. |

In all seriousness, I don't mess around much with those mysterious data files.
Let's suppose I wanted to backup the files outside the dynasty/data file. What would be the best way to do that. My idea being as stated earlier: To keep the players intact, though the league file goes corrupt. In essence, I'd try to save my fictional rosters so the players could be re-loaded as happens when a historical file goes corrupt. Easiest way to accomplish that thru three or four roster saves a year? Last edited by knockahoma; 03-18-2010 at 11:59 AM. |

Was that a stupid question, or just no one knows?
I'm trying to figure the easiest way to save players in case a league goes corrupt. I have been periodically saving my league as a "quick-start" to save stats and players in case something goes hay-wire. But OFG brings up a good point. What if the bug has been saved into your backup? So, spreadsheets, or....? Anyone have an easy way to save fictional leagues/stats as historical players/stats are saved by Lahman? Must I create a Lahman-type database for the fictional league to be downloaded at any time? Since I don't do spreadsheets, what are the challenges and time requirements? |

You are descended from Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, and Peter Tork? Odd.

Well, crap. Why couldn't I foresee the lottery numbers like this.
Sure as God made little green apples, my fear has come upon me. Every game I tried to load today got that dreaded white screen: "OOTP" has stopped working. No backup, including my quickstart backups, will load. Oh, the humanity. Last edited by knockahoma; 03-19-2010 at 08:42 PM. |

Well, managed to save the league by removing it from the folder and saving it to desktop. Then deleted all other files and reloaded the game. When I replaced the league file back into the newly reloaded game, it came right back.
Guess I'd better learn a bit more about how to protect this league. |

Yes, I remember reading about this once before, back in version 7 or 8. I'm thinking it was in a 'new to the game' thread, rather than a support ticket. At the time it was reported the consensus (among like two or three of us) was that we'd never heard of this before, and we were unable to help the guy. Based on that limited memory, I'm going to tell you that this did not crop up again in Version 9 or 10, and that would make it unlikely that it would again in 11. Hope that's useful.
