A Delicious Smörgåsbord wins the NL MVP
This was an actual game-generated news story that I just had to share... Bill Crumb of the of the Philadelphia Phillies enjoyed a gourmet season at the dish in 1811. With the numbers he put up, there was little doubt that he'd be taking home the National League Most Valuable Player.
He put up 148 hits in 441 at-bats for a .336 average while amassing 41 doubles, 11 triples, 4 home runs, 33 walks, a .387 on-base percentage, 60 RBIs and 64 runs scored.

Early 19th Century Baseball
I start my fictional leagues in 1800 and then start adding real players in 1871. That gives me 70 years of history to build on! Also, there is some evidence that baseball was played by boys in Colonial America:
Did baseball start in Pittsfield, Mass.? 1791 bylaw refers to game 48 years before Doubleday said to have written rules document PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Officials and historians in this western Massachusetts city released a 213-year-old document Tuesday that they believe is the earliest written reference to baseball. The evidence comes in a 1791 bylaw that aims to protect the windows in Pittsfield’s new meeting house by prohibiting anyone from playing baseball within 80 yards of the building. That bylaw would have been produced well before Abner Doubleday is said to have written the rules for the game in 1839.
